A CREMATION.
A cremation took place at the West-ter
race Cemetery crematorium on Friday after
noon. The body was that of Mr. Charles
J. S. Chappie, of Prospect, who died on
Thursday evening. The ceremony was car
ried out in accordance with the expressed
wish of the deceased, who was a member
-Qf the Anglican Church, and the funeral of
the remains will take place to-day at the
North-road Cemetery. Mr. H. G. Mil
idred, the curator, states that the incinera
tion was successful. The heat in the
I chamber was 2,000 deg. Fahr., and the pro
cess was completed in 40 minutes. This is
the seventh cremation that has taken place
since the inauguration of the crematorium
in 1902. Mr. Mildred said significantly:—
"There are many more on my 'list,' some of
them prominent citizens, who will go into
the incinerator when their time comes. It
would surprise you to know how many
people have signified their intention of be
ing cremated." When asked how he got
his information, the curator said that it,
came from relations of people who had
made their wills with that stipulation,
which was conveyed to him in the usual
official manner.
