TOWS V. COUNTRY.
On the last day of the O'd Year a team of
players from the Adelaide Draughts Qlab
journeyed to the pretty township of Clare, at
the invitation of the Clare players, to contest a
match over the board with the local players.
Having arrived at Clare (after a charming drive
by Hill & Co. from Saddlewortb) they were
met by representatives of the Clare club and
directed to the Commercial Hotel, where
arrangements bad been made by the Clare
club for their accommodation. After au excel
lent dinner, to which full justice wa3 done, and
an inspection of the beautiful town, a start was
made with the match. There were seven
players on each Bide, and it was agreed to play
* four games each, all unfinished at 11 o'clock
to be considered off. They have at Clare a
very fair playes in Jimmy, an aboriginal*
and when Mr. Bruce, of the Adelaides, had
finished with his opponent it was suggested by
the Adelaide secretary that he should tackle
Jimmy. The result proved disastrous to
Jimmy, as he loBt the four games in a very
short time. All the. other players except at
one board got through their four games before
11 o'clock, the exception being the board occu
pied by Mr. John Drennan, the Clare leader,
and Mr. W. Hogg; they played only three
games, the total number played was therefore
31, and the result waB—Adelaides, 2 and
Clare, 8£. After the play was over the tables
were laid with an abundant supply of refresh
ments, and a smoke social waB kept up
till the wee sma' hours of the New Year.
Mr, Gillen, M.P., occupied the chair, and
an extremely pleasant evening was spent.
Songs and recitations were given fay those pre
sent and the usual toasts honored, the social
concluding by all present singing " Auld Lang
Syne,
Not content with their previous kindnesses,
the Clare club invited their visitors to a
beautiful drive on New Year's Day to the
Hill River station, owned by Mr. Augas. The
party, having arrived at the station, were
shown ail the prize cattle, pigs, &c., for which
the owner is famous, and having admired the
glorious scenery surrounding returned to
Clare in time for dinner, The visiting club
were so delighted with the treatment they
received on all hands that they could not find
words to sufficiently express their gratitude.^ Id
is to be hoped that this is only the beginning
of a long series of friendly visits between town
and country, as nothing will tend to bring the
noble game into greater favor than matches'of
