POLICE.
ADELAIDE: Saturday, December 2.
(Before Mr. H. K. Paine, S.M.)
Lilian Bentley, a young womim, denied having
been without sufficient lawful means of support
at Adelaide 011 December 1. Set Kennedy prosecuted,
and Mr. 3. W. Nefflgan defended. Plainclothes
Constable Tarlor stated that during the
week be bad seen the accused frequently at
bouses of bad repute in tbe western part of the
city and in the cooipam- of convicted persons.
About 3.80 'p.m. on Friday, in consequence of 1
a complaint received, he went to a bouse' in
Andrew street and saw the accused in a state of
intoxication lying on a stretcher. There were
.two - convicted men and a convicted woman
in her company. Witness said to the accused,
"Wlist are you doing heref" She
replied in offensive language, and was
arrested. Mr. Nelligan contended that there
TOS no evidence to prove that accused had been
without sufficient lawful means of support. 6he
liad been liberated from gaol on November 27,
after having served "one tnnoth on a similar conviction,
and was met by Mr. Baird,-for whom she
was housekeeper at £1 a week. The accused
gave-evidence. The S.W„ said that, in view of the
evidence of the police, he could not believe the
story of the accused. Three months' imprisonment
was ordered.
Joseph Sherry, a young man, was remanded
until Monday, December 11, on a charge of
having been without sufficient lawful means of
support at Adelaide on December 1. Mr J W
Nelligan, who appeared for the accused, applied
for bail. Sgt. Kennedy, for the prosecution, requested
that the bail should be made substantial.
The bond wis fixed at £10 and a surety
of £10.
Hilland O. Pike admitted having driven a
motor car along the Port road, Adelaide, on
November 24, at 28 miles per hour, and he was
ordered to pay £1 IS/.
