FIGHT BETWEEN BURKE AND
SLAYIN.
[By Telegraph.]
Melbourne. July 9.
A glove fight between Jack Burke and
Frank P, Slavin for eight rounds, Marquis of
Queensberry rules, took place to night in the
Hibernian Hall, which was crammed. The
Marquis of Queensberry acted as a referee.
Both men opened cautiously, Slavin doing
most of the work and Burke acting on the
defensive. Slavin again and again got in his
left on Burke's ribs, and the first three rounds
were a repetition of one another, Slavin forcing
the fighting and once or twice driving Burke
almost againBt the ropes, Slavin's weight and
reach seemed to tell in the remaining rounds,
which were generally regarded as in his favor.
Ultimately the match was declared a draw.
Burke's science was apparent, his hitting being
very clean and hard, The gate money was
divided.
