THE MATABELE RISING.
Farther particulars are to hand respecting
the fighting at luyahti, about 40 miles north
east of Buluwayo, where five white men were
killed, an attempt made by a mounted patrol
to relievo them being unsncce-sful. It ap
pears that a desperate straggle took place,
which rosulted in the repulse of the patrol,
who wore compelled to retreat. A number of
them were killod, and the Matabele captured
30 rifles and 3000 rounds of cartridges.
There has also been another encounter,
in which a patrol defeated a body of Matebele,
killing 30 of them. The natives fought with
assegais and knobkerries, and carried on a
hand-to-hand conflict with groat determina
tion. The total native loss so far is esti
mated at 300 men. The instigator of the ris
ing is Olimo, one of the leading indunas or
chiefs of the late King Lobengnla, and he has
proclaimed himself king of the Matabele,
