INFANTICIDE AN EVERY-DAY OC
CURRENCE.
WOMEN AND CHILDREN BARTER

LONDON, Wednesday.
The famine which is desolating the
northern Chinese provinces of Shensi
and Shansi is the worst ever recorded in
the history of the country.
Fully two-thirds of the inhabitants are
without food, all the animals, including
oxen, horses, and dogs, having been
eaten.
To add to the horrors of the situation,
the weather is bitterly cold, and the
plight, of the unfortunate people, with
out food or lire, is appalling in the ex
treme.
Cannibalism and infanticide are of
every-day occurrence, and men are sell
ing their women and children for a mor
sel of bread.
