IN BURMA
Raid on
Calcutta
LONDON, Dec. 22 (A.A.P.).
The . correspondent of the
"Times" at G.H.Q., India, says .
that .after occupying' the. Maung-
daw-Buthidaung area (about ,60
miles north-west of Akyab, on
(the Bay of Bengal) ; part of our
force pushed on immediately and
without resistance 'captured A!e-
thangyow, 11- miles below Maung-
daw, and with a landing ground
on .the coast.
An Indian joint war communi
que issued in London to-day
stated that early in the morn
ing a small number of enemy- air
craft briefly raided, the Calcutta
area for the second consecutive
day.: Some bombs were dropped
but there, was little damage, and
only slight casualties were re-,
ported. . . !
. . American bombers and fighters
dropped seven tons of bombs on
Lashio, the Japanese-occupied
base in Burma, arid destroyed
warehouses and other installa- '
tioris in :the city, .damaged han
gars, on the aerodrome and
started. huge. fires. They machine-
gunned ..trucks and troops. They
encountered heavy anti-aircraft '
fire, but no planes were seen on
the aerodrome, and there was no
attempt at . interception, leading
to 'the belief that the Japanese
air forces have been transferred
to Akyab.
