a<- an 'unpleasant surpilse for
the Swiss people, who so fai had
not come into close contact with
such honois of war All Swit-
zeiland is indignant at the out
rage It is Impossible for the
Swiss people to find an explana
tion for such mthless bombing
I, is unbellevrble that the pilot,

The apology by the United
States Mlnlstei is viewed In
Washington as dealing the wa\
foi the eventual payment of in
demnities It is customaiy In
such chcumstances fot a fiiendlv
Government to lodge a foimal
piotest and then file a claim fot
pioperty and peisonal damage
"Tragic Error"
The "New York Times" says
the tiagic erioi at Schaflhausen
shows that precision bombing Is
not always as piccise as was as
sumed Neutial countnes neai
battle fionts in all wais suffci
some of the hazards of the inno
cent . bystander; They have been
bombed previously,. but usually by
stray pianos in- trouble and iry-
ing to clear their bombraoks, but
deliberate bombing, especially in
daylight, should. never be made a
mere matter of guesswork.
"Naturally our fliers are chag
rined and--- distressed," the
journal adds, "and the respon
sibility should promptly be
fixed.
