DRY WINTER
Causes Farmers
Concern
Lack of winter rains is causing a
serious position in the agricultural
areas of the State, particularly in the
north, where wheat sowing has been
hampered. The Premier said yester-
day the season .was one 01 tne driest
on record. Cropping was being held
up, and lambing, as already advised
hv the Atrrioiiltural denartment. had
been so serious affected that a poor
lamb export season was expected. If
rains did not come soon tne general
position would be very worrying.
Good rains can yet help wheat
growing, and as a result of the boun
tiful spring most dairying farmers,
particularly in Gippsland, nave heavy
fodder reserves. Tne potato crop, how
ever, threatens to be light, and will
be even less than the low yield of
last year.
Another problem to be faced by
farmers will be that of harvesting
where crops are good. Machinery has
aided primary industry considerably,
but lack of workers through enlist
ments might result in a call for
woman workers to assist in harvest
ing operations.
