PRECARIOUS GAS
SUPPLY
More Coal To-day
for Industry
Uncertainty regarding the time of departure of.
the collier Ocean Vesper from Newcastle, with 8500
tons of gas coal, may necessitate gas rationing at the
week end or earlv next week.
No comment was made by the
Metropolitan Gas Company yes
terday, but sufficient coal should
be available to maintain normal
gas supplies until Saturday.
More coal for Industry, which
will alleviate the plight of brick
and tile kilns, will be unloaded
from the collier River Loddon at
South Wharf to-day. About 4000
tons will be discharged before
Friday.
The River Loddon, after arriv
ing yesterday morning, unloaded
about 1000 tons of coal for the .
railways and country use.
The Dilga, with gas coal, is due
early this morning, having been- '
delayed by rough weather.
Train Cut Threat
Sufficient coal has arrived at
Victorian border stations . to "
maintain the present suburban
and country services until Mon-.-
day. The Railways Commissioners .
yesterday issued a further warn-' '
ing that any delay in next week's '
coal consignments through the- -.
present idleness of some New .
South Wales mines may force
them to make further cuts In -
both suburban and country ser- .
vices.
When next week's coal allot-
menst are reviewed next Tuesday,
the Commissioners will decide on "
future services.
To provide residents of Leon-:
gatha and Wonthaggi with a "
dally return service to Melbourne "
once a week, the Railway Com-
missioners have allowed the 6.35
p.m. train from Melbourne to
Leongatha and the 5.20 p.m. from
Leongatha to Melbourne to run -
every Tuesday.
Suitable connecting services
will run from Wonthaggi. .
.These trains were withdrawn --
from service when a 25 per cent.. -
cut was made in country services
from June 23.
ADELAIDE CUTS
Gas Co.'s Plight' ;
ADELAIDE, Tuesday. — It was-
offleially stated to-night that
drastic restrictions were inevitable
in South Australia for services'
depending on coal.

O'Dea) said thus afternoon that,
owing to the late arrival of the
River Hunter, due to adverse
weather conditions, . - the Gas .
Company had run out of coal this
afternoon, with , the .''result' that"
generally the normal supply be- "
gan to fall from about 4 p.m. -
