Solomons Masterly
Playing
SOLOMON'S final
piano recital in the
Town Hall on Satur-
day night was heard
by a capacity audi-
ence. The hall and
organ seats were full

and 100 extra chairs
were made available
on the platform.
Since this was an extra
"request" concert the pro-
gramme was designed for
majority appeal.
However, no matter
what Solomon plays, it
always sounds superb.
He opened with Haydn's
Sonata in C Major, a
three-movement work,
bright and entertaining,
and fingered with great
beauty.
One of the many sonatas
of Domenico Scarlatti, fol-
lowed—that in F Major.
This delightful little work
lasted only a few minutes
and was a splendid exam-
ple of the miniaturist's
art.
The big work of the
evening was Beethoven's
Sonata in F Minor, Op. 57,
the Appassionata.
Solomon is undoubted-
ly a great Beethoven ex-
ponent, who can be
heard by the critic with
the anticipation of
everything being right
and nothing out of
place.
However, It did register
the thought that Solomon's
programmes could have in-
cluded much more Beetho-
ven than was given us in
the present season.
A charming Chopin re-
cital formed the second
half of the concert, con-
sisting mostly of small
pieces and ending with a
magnificent reading of the
Scherzo in B Flat minor,
Op. 31.
Solomon will be heard
this week with the Victor-
ian Orchestra on Thurs-
day in the Beethoven "Em-
peror" Concerto and on
Saturday in the Schumann
Concerto,
