AJ.C. DERBY START
FOR TRUE COURSE
Achilles for Epsom
By Heroic
Mentone trainer, F. W. Hoysted, decided yesterday to take
True Course and Achilles to Sydney for the AJ.C. Spring car
nival which opens at Randwick on September 30. They will be
rtdden by W. Williamson in their respective races.
Cups candidates, Clement (Caulfield Cup) and Peerless Fox
(Melbourne Cup favorite) ran sterling trials in Heatherlie
- Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday.
True Course is set for the
A-J.C. Derby, and Achilles's
mission is - the mile Epsom
Handicap — the "first leg" of
Sydney's big spring double, the
Epsom and Metropolitan.
There was some doubt about
True Course and Achilles going
to Sydney until after they ran
last Saturday, but both ex
celled, and if they train on
should win at least one of the
big events at the carnival.
Hoysted also has Qustar and
Midway in the A-J.C. Derby.
Judging by the way Qustar is
progressing, his owner, Mr.
John Wren, is likely to attempt
to win his second AJ.C. Derby.
,Mr. Wren won with Pandect
In 1940.
Although True Course fin
ished three lengths behind
Comlo Court in the Memsie
Stakes on Saturday, there
was great merit in her per
formance, and she con
founded the critics who said
after her third at Moonec
Valley the previous Saturday
' that she was too light in
condition to stand a Derby
preparation.
Good Finish
W. A. Smith wisely did not
knock True Course about when
he saw the filly had no chance
of catching Comic Court, but
she showed her staying quali
ties by coming, from behind
and going around Iron Duke
.to beat him for second money.
It was a first-rate effort at
this stage of a Derby candi
date's preparation.
True Course will not clash
With Chlcqulta in the John P.
Feehan Stakes at the Valley
next Saturday, and Achilles is
an unlikely starter in the same
race.
Hoysted's plan for True
. Course is that she will not
race again in Melbourne be
fore leaving for Sydney.
True Course will add much
color to the- AJ.C. Derby flelc
The last filly to win the class!
was Tea Rose in 1944.
Like True Course, Achilles is
a Randwick winner, and there
is a big incentive for Hoysted
to win the Epsom with the
four-year-old.
Achilles is raced by AJ.C.
committeeman Mr. T. L. Bail-
lieu. The horses was formerly
trained at Randwick by Prank
McGrath.
Trumps surprised by win
ning the Heatherlie on Sat
urday as his trainer, W.
O'Dwycr, had the little horse
set for the Toorak Handicap
and Caulfield Cup.
But as I saw the race,
Achilles appeared to me to be
something beaten. In the last
50 yards or so, he was full of
running, but could not get a
break between the leaders and
Williamson had no alternative
but to check his mount for fear
of getting on to the heels of
Trumps.
Achilles had to be content
with fourth place, but with any
luck at all I think' he would
have won.
In my opinion, Achilles' run
was a winning trial for the
Epsom.
There is no doubt about
Achilles' class up to a mile, and
the A.J.C. handlcapper agrees
on that point, too.
Peerless Pox, favorite for the
Melbourne Cup, unwound a

withering rUn to finish fifth in
the Heatherlie.
He was third , last of a
strung-out field just afte
passing the half-mile post, and
was still hopelessly placed 01
the turn.
The Foxbrldge gelding is the
greatest staying find ' of the
year. Weight-for-age over two
miles for a five-year-old geld
ing in November is 9.2, so
Peerless Pox, on 8.3 in the Cup
has a tremendous advantage.
Clement, who ' finished
second to Trumps, also madt
up a lot of ground, and this
true stayer, who is highly fan
cied for the Caulfield Cup, will
be better suited by distance
races in the future.
