CEASE WORK
THREAT
Building Trade
Disputes
Owing to the delay in adjusting
their grievances, about 400 building
workers on defence contracts at Deer
Park may cease work to-morrow
night.
The vigilance commiu.ee oi. uie
Building Trades Federation resolved
yesterday that unless definite arrange
ments were made for a conference to
day the men would be instructed to
leave the jobs on Friday- night. The
matters in dispute relate to carpenters'
rates of pay, payment for time lost
through inclement weather and zone
The secretary of the federation
(Mr. D. Thomson) said yesterday that
for the past three weeks they had
been trying to have the matters In
dispute adjusted and, as some of the
jobs were nearing completion, the men
felt that they were being stalled off.
A conference to deal with the dis
pute was to have been held on Tues
day, but the Conciliation Commis
sioner (Mr. M. Stewart) had to leave
for Sydney, and it was postponed.
Other grievances to be discussed at
the conference relate to the payment oi
zone rates, and for time lost through
inclement weather to building workers
at the Heidelberg military hospital,
aircraft trainees doing plumbers' work
at Deer Park, and zone rates and In
clement weather payment for building
workers on a job at Maribyrnong.
The dispute relating to the employ
ment of trainees as plumbers will be
discussed at a meeting of the twenty
plumbers affected this morning, when
they will give notice of their intention
to cease work. Any attempt to re
place them would, it was said, result
in a general stoppage of work at Deer
Park.
