TEACHER.'?' TROUBLES.
Tlie Minister of Education (HOD. F. AV.
Conej-beer) stated.oil Friday in reference to
Aliss Goodfellow's reply in The Rf^ister:—
'"I, too, have the qius-rtions before me. Miss
Goodfello«- if right about the paper; it is
not foolscap, it is letter size, just 2% in.
shorter than foolscap. The first question
consias of six fentenocs. 19 lines. 154 words.
The question was preceded by certain statements,
which'I believed then to be not in
accordance with fact. £. have riuce made
sure that this is to. The second question
was shorter, but again began with a statement.
iiUo contraiy to fact. The third question
also contained one or more incorrect
statements. In each case the question was
made to depend upon falacious premises,
but so cleverly, that to attempt, to answeroffhand
would have been unwise. All three
questions dealt with matters which took
place or liad been mainly in progress during
my illness in the eariy part of 19U.
Perhaps Miss Goodfellow is right in saying
that the questions were not as long as I
have impli?d—that is. long in words—
but they were very mnr.h longer in meaning
and in tearinpc than Miss Goodfellow implies.
Miss Goodfellow's interview was not
held at Parliament House_ because of the
desire that it should be private. She came
to mv office, and asked if I would see ber.
I- was not in at the time, but happened to
meet ber at tlie door as fie went out, and
fixed the meeting for Parliament House for
my own convenience entirely. It was in
answer to my question as to the subject on
which slie wished to talk thai she expressed
the desire that the conversation should be
of a private nature. My memory is not in
the least ."onfused - by the 'clamour and
bustle of the election.' "
