THE TATLER.
"Nothing extenuate, nor aught setdown
In malice."—JULIUS CIZSAR.
WHO poisoned those dogs ? While I
regret that valuable dogs should be
destroyed and there are about four or five
dogs in the town that from their breeding
and quality were worth keeping, I rejoice
at the sweep that has been made of those
useless curs which were hanging round at
every street corner, amusing themselves
in the daytime by rushing madly at horsemen
who might chance to pass and keeping
the fun going at night by taking to
the suburbs and worrying aheep. The
poor critters must have fun of some sort,
so I suppose reasoned their owners—a
matter of tilling a few sheep is of no consequence,
sheep weirfe intended to'be killed
and eaten. Now, Mr. Dog Poisoner, call
on me and I will give you a present as I
consider yon a public benefactor.
THE coming holidays ore suggestive
of sport. What about a regatta for
Queen's birthday ? apropos of regattas, I
have some recollection of Messrs Daly
and Formby being the executive" of last
year, did not they get £28 as a balance
from the previous year for a ntart I
fancy tbe subscriptions came in pretty
right, so that our Secretary and Treasurer
ought to liave been in decent funds, then
again, the entries fell far short of the
advertisement list, so tbat there would be
a wide difference between the amounts
obtained in prizes and that offered, and
the relative proportion to that subscribed
must show a margin.:' I know it i$ neither
pleasant to ask norjanswer ugly questions,
but what has become of the funds of the
regatta? i.e. ' thi Burplns, tbe ndn contested
events which ^reverted to the coin •
mittee, why has there ,not been a balance
sheet showing the state of affairs ? echo
answers,—why ? there was a good man
who was known and who would have had
the confidence of the public ready to take
the post of Secretary. I hope there
will be better luck next time.
How about tbe race tbat was to have
come off between the Canadian and our
watchmaker ? I have some recollection of
the Canadian winning first heat, and not
caring to take a pound for the sake, of
taking it, and as it ma considered a fluke
of a win, there was «n agreement to go for
a two oat of three for a bigger stake. All
this happened last August. Now, I like a
bit of sport, and-should iike^this event to
comooff. Who's afraid ? I do not think
the Canadian is; in fact, I heard ICutilus
had sort of backed out . It's •ery absurd
for people to bark iibont backing their
craft and then draw ont of it.
'
WHAT'6 the matter with Port Pirie and
tbe regatta? They go contrary to all
rules of yachting ciubB, whether in Sydney,'
Melbourne, or Adelaide. I suppose they.
are afraid Fort Augusta; with bcr: one or.
two centie board boate will pull off a xace
or two. We . never begradged them the
rizes they tookfrom usfromtime totime. >
S[y dear Pirw" boating friend^ don't be
mean; or at any'rate^have some appearof
liberality by witbdrawing so manifestly
absurd alawor rale. "Assume' a liriw
if you have it not."
How about the human ekdeton •^hick"
was found outside the Cemetery.
Wha£
enquiiy was made ?
Was it the body iof
a boy or man ?
Was there anything >
peculiar about the remnants ot rlptb»"g-
