In the oversea trade returns, of the
Commonwealth -for the first month of. the
present financial year some new depar
tures have 'been made. ' Amongst other
! changes, bullion and specio are now ex-
cluded from the totals of imports anu. ex
ports, tho figures for which now cover
merchandise only. Imports of merchan
dise wore valued at £13,273,770, or
£1,089,318 more than for July last year,
and imports of bullion and specie de
clined from £28,139- to £3404. Exports
of merchandise were £9,828,327, ov
£2,824,554 mora than for Jul?, 1925, ex
ports of bullion and specie increasing
from £129,188 to £3,521,077. The latter
sum represents part of the. shipments
made to tho United States on account of
the Bank of England. Thc adverse mer-.
ebnndise trade balance is £3,445,443. In
imports, npparel and attire, textiles and
manufactured fibres increased from
£3,500.667 to £3,799,185; cotton and linen
piece goods declining from £1,008,100 to
£960,586, and woollen piece goods from
£225,367 to £170,195, while piece goods of
silk or containing . silk increased from
£624,772 to £737,001. Metals, metal
manufactures aud machinery decreased
from £3,534,861 to £3,520,204. In this
class chassis for motor cars and parts de
clined from £018,266 to £798,387. In ex-
ports beef fell from £434,135 to £257.633,
wheat from £609,217 to £449,157, flour
from £524,309 to £411,879, and sugar
from £370,842 to £4446. Greasy wool
increased from. £961,777 to £1,112,758, and
scoured and washed wool from £360,500
to £521,360. The general position is
shown in the accompanying table:—

Victoria's' Butter Exports..
The increased output of butter, in Vic
toria last month is reflected in the export
figures suppljed by the Giistoms depart
ment. Shipments totalled 774,251. lb., com
puted to be worth £ co, 418, wliich compares
with 404,304 )b., worth £42.508, shipped in
July last, and -457041 lb., worth £39,890,
in Aupist, '1925. Tlie,' tTnited Kingdom'
was the chdcf' importing country last
month, taking i 499,912 lb., worth £37,493.
Other destinations included Java, 156,888
lb.; humntra, 34,493 lb.; British Malaya,
22,651 lb;; Cm-Ion, 16,375 lb.; Celebes,
13,058 lb.; ami China, 11,965 lb.
Tallow. Sales. I
Average- catalogues were submitted at
the public auction sale of tallow held in
Melbourne yesterday. These comprised
mostly inferior packages. Competition
was keen throughout, and prices were firm
at last weeWs rates: Prime mixed tallow,
