ENGLISH CHANNEL SWIM.
SPEED AN ESSENTIAL QUALI-
. FICATION.
LONbON, -31st August.
. A powerful crawl stroke lias definitely
mastered the English Channel, says .-How-
croft, the British Olympic coach. "If
'Boy' Charlton or Arne Borg, naming
only two, decided to muke the attempt,
they would cross the Channel inten hours
or less."
He added that Miss Ederlo and Mrs.
Corson, who hnvc accomplished the feat,
are products of modern instructional me
thods. Previously every Channel aspirant
relied oil either the -breast, side or trud-
geofi stroke. At one time speed was dis
counted in- favor of stamina, but it is
now apparcnt that speed is most valuable,
provided the swimmer was trained in en
durance. '. - . ' ' ;
