A Pottery Exhibition.
Miss Philippa James has opened a very
interesting exhibition of pottery at Evevy-
man's Library, 11 Toorak-road, South
Yarra. She was a pupil of Mr. Merric
Boyd's, whose work is well known in arts
and crafts circles, and has a kiln aud fur-
nace of her own. She. lias achieved success
in her glazing, and is able to produce al-
most any color she wishes. Some of her
most interesting bowls, in dark colors, have
been treated with oxide of copper, which
in the firing goes green, but if the draught
is let in it turns red. She has been able
to make bowls which feature both these
colors,.as well as foundation greens and
brown. Each piece of pottery takes
twelve hours to fire, and some of the more
important ones take as many as three fir-
ings before they are completed.
Her work is largely Australian in de-
sign, the little gum nuts and gum leaves
being chosen for cigarette barrels for card
tables, for small bowls, for fancy jugs and
for larger rose bowls. Another design in
which she is making some of her work dis-
tinctive is the bent-tree pattern. This
shades from biscuit to deep woody browns
Her more delicate pink, blue and mauve
glazes are particularly attractive.
The exhibition will remain open for the
coming fortnight.
