A CANBERRA CONTRACT.
Remains in Australia.
In marked contrast to the attitude of
the City Council was that of the Federal
Capital Commission, when it recently
called tenders for the supply of indirect
and direct special electric light fittings
for Parliament House at Canberra. The
successful tenderers were Hips (Aus
tralia) Ltd., who yesterday received noti
fication of the acceptance of their tender,
which is for a sum of between one ami
two thousand pounds. The whole of the
fittings will be Australian-made, with the
exception of the globes, which cannot be
made, here.
It is pointed out that in this instance
the Commonwealth architects made avail
able ample specifications and designs, so
' that, all tenderers were on an equal foot
ing. Had this been done in the enso -of
the Town Hall tender there would have
been no cause for complaint, said a repre
sentative of the abovcincntioncd firm yes
terday. . The Federal authorities, he
added, did not share the opinion of the
advisers to the town hall and baths com
mittee, who apparently considered that
Australians could not do efficient work.
The building at Canberra would probably
be the most important .in Australia. The
lighting scheme was not exactly similar
to that of the Town Hall, but the fittings
would be made, in the same way and of
the same materials. '
