The CvTsmeretAl airices to ha&d by tho
San FrsncUco Eli! steamer are or more
than ordinary interest. Tho CaJiiorniaa wheat
crop is altogether unprecedented in quan
tity, bo:ng about 32,000,0 00 centals, cr
53,340, 000 bushels — nors than 50 per cent.—
higher than the prerioas year, and about 45
per cent, higher than tho greatest yield pre
viously reported. Tho total quantity 0: ne
wheat available for export is 1,000,000 tons, in
, addition to an extensive surplus of the harvest
of 1850 still cn hand, London advices of the 25th
of August give the follovring in regard io the har
vest of the world, which claims attention : — " A
volume of reports on the harvest oi tbe different
countries throughout tho world, brought ou:
annually, is now being issued. Reports of the
'wheat crop in France are this year from over a
larger area, and indicate a better .crop than last
year. This years barley is not so good as in
1SS0, but is fairly good. Maize is very' ordinary.
Oata and rye are fair. On the whole crops aro
not up to those of last year, but wheat is uo;
ouch below the average. Xono of the crops will
be very tad, bnt none will be very good.
Crops in' Great Britain are described as follows :
— Wheat, 10 per cent, below average, and likely to
realise only 10,000,000 quarters ; barley, 10 per
cent, above average, and oats 20 per cent, below
average. The year ia one in which farmers are
not likely to recoup themselves for looses during
the past five years. In Anstria and Hungary
crops are good all round. VTheat and barley
will be above the average : rye very much,
and oats slightly under the average. Re
ports from Italy agree that crops are of
medium quality, and much below the abund
ance of 15-50. In the Turkish provinces on
the Danube the wheat harvest will be me
dium, and rye good and abundant. Barley good
as regards quantity, but bad in quality. Oats
very much above the average. All reports from
Russia agree that barley is the best crop of the
year, doubling that of 1550 in quantity, bet not
so riump and weighty, and rye abundant Wheat
is good throughout Germany. "Winter and
spring sowings ia marked contrast, the former
yielding a good and tbe latter a defective crop.
Oats and rye good. Barley thin, ar.d none of tho
crops are of an average. In the Prussian States
crop- are fair. . Swiss wheat crop is very poor in
quantity, owing to tbe drought, but in quality
it isreryfine. Oataand barley are good in quantity
and quality, but there is a small area sown cf
thelatteri Tn Belgium wheat is far below the j
average. Barley is good ; rye and cats fair.
All crops in Spain are bad. All cereals in Hoi- I
land aro in good condition. All reports from the J
United States agree that the yield will be under '
the average." Heavy speculations are reported
in both New York Chicago, which accounts
for the late sudden rise is prices.
As regards grain, we hare by telegram to San
Francisco the following report of London prices.
Under data cf T/r.r 15th August, the
Mark Zone Express, in its review of the grain
trade for the week, says ,4Tfae past week i3
weather has jeopardised the harvest. Mildew
is rapidly developing in standing grain, and cold
nights and moist days are causing wheat in
sheaves to sprout. The quality o: wheats, from
whirb the best results were expected, ts found to
be affeevsd by premature ripeness, aad the quality
and yield are disappointing. In both Great
Britain and on the continent there has been an
advance in the price of wheat, not solely ou ac
count of the disappointing harvest. Stocks have
been 1-t aon low in anticipation ef darly deli
veries. These calculations have been upset by
the weather, which entirely prevented threshing
from the fields. The hulk cd the crop must go
through the ordinary sweating ia stacks
before it comes to any extended market.
Practically there is no 'old 'native' wheat.
The advance is in sympathy with foreign
values. TThiats opened at an advance of 2s.
io 3s., closing 3s. to 4s. dearer. The new
crop is dimcult to quote, on account of the varied
quality and sssreity. Foreign trade has been
more active. Millers have been putting up stocks
at aa advance of 3s. to 4s. per quarter. Flour
bas been scarce oa the spot. Oa Monday prices
improved 2s.. ani on Friday values were still
firmer. Foreign supplies continue light, and
show a similar advance. Barley was Is. dearer,
in sympathy with other feeding studs."
Business in our own markets closes quietly for
the week ; the inquiry, however, is fairly sus
tained for leading lines. Breadstuff quiet, the
easier tone ia the European markets and the ad.
vance in freights both tending to check' hopes ot a
larger export trade being done for the present,
after current engagements are concluded. Flonr
is quoted at £11 2s. 6d. to £11 5s. fcr small
parcels; tittle doing. Wheat remains firm at 5s.
7d. for prime parcels. Feeding grain3 quiet.
Oats aro moving at 3s. 2d. for common
feed up to 3s. 6d. for stout. Maize sold
at 4a. to 4s. OH. For barley there is still a wellt
supported demand for prime mairing samples ;
business at 3s. Cd. Braa moving at laid. Bag
ging unchanged. Candles remain firm, with
small sales of Da Rouhaix's, for export, at 6|d.
The sugar market is strong, and with the daily
increasing demand we may look fcr improved
prices. Brewers' crystals still active. SCO
pockets cf whites sold at £34 15a. ; greys quitted
at and up to £33, whilst the same price has been
paid for a line of bright yellows. Teas are in
fair demand. Oilmen's stores aro active, and
well-assorted invoices of Cwlman'a and other
leading brands find ready purchasers. Further
busintS3 in dried traits. Reviewing the salmon,
packing trade of 1550-1, the San Frsndi:
Journal 0/ Commei-cc says that, although "there
is a gcod outlook for tha market, the theory of
a short pack is somewhat doubtful. The Colum
bia River pack is estimated at 400,000 cases.
The Fraser RiTer, however, shows a falling od
The total shipments this season from San Fran
cisco and Sacramento has been 129,355 cases.
Tbe shipments noted consisted of 50,000 casea
of Sacramento packing, receipts of Columbia
River, 39,642 cases ; a total of 59,642 cases, the
balance of stock remaining over from last season."
Ail descriptions of tinned fish have advanced in
our own market. With regard to kerosene, Messrs.
Ark ell and Co., writing from New York, say : —
"The market has been firm during the past
month, with very tittle variation in prices, and a
large general export trade has been done in both
barrels and cases, in fact, larger than for some
time back, and much in excess of last year,
though for the colonies the movement appears to
ba?e been very light, and tbe trade there lor this
article looks as if marked by dulness. Vessels
on the berth, bare, so far as we have been able
to learn, but few engagements, and no shipments
of any great import hare to be reported. Tho
barque Abiel Abbot, for Melbourne, has about
1000 ; the Olive Tburlow, for Adelaide, about
1500 ; the Mikado, just placed cn the berth, for
Sydney and Brisbane, no engagements yet ; and
the Tonjoy. for Docedia and Lytiehon. and ths
Gwendoline, for Oaoani and Auckland, have
very moderate engagements. Sailed : From Bos-
1 ton, for Sydney, T. L. Sweet, rul ; Boston to Mel
bourne, Wyio, 4250 casos ; New York, for New
Zealand, Error, 2150 cases ; Beatrice Havener,
for New Zealand port, 4 7 CO cases : Melrose, for
Melbourne, 16,500 cases : F. P. Litchfield, for
Sydney, 2575cases : Crescent, from New York,
for Sydney, 2050 cases ; Louis Agnes, for Wel
lington, 5000 cases."

nian mail steamer are dated San Francisco, 25th

follows :— Receipt, 2,523,992 c:!s ; exports, 2,3vi,313.
The chief characteristic of yesterday marke: was the
absolute indifference ot exporters to the business oa
hand. When pressed for bids a rid-calouiiy low
ncure would be named, which would put an end to
eil father negotiatioas. The session <": tie Produce
