Ties at twenty points for tha medal. Arranged that one
shot should decide. 400 yards. H. B. W. Chappie, 0 ;
Sergeant Macartney, 2. 'Sergeant Macartney is there
fore winner of the first medal given ill the corps. Drill
instructor O'Meara conductod the firing In tho most
satisfactory and soldier-like manner, deserving of tho
best thanks of every volunteer present. It will bo soen
that only 21 fired out of tho 43 entries; tho other 22
?were disqualified through bad shooting and absence.
Cheers wero given for Chspplo and Macartnev, and for
Captains Anderson and Skcno at tho close of tbo com
petition. Tho winner's score at 400 yards, wo believe,
bos not yet been surpassed in tbo colony ; out of five
hots ha mado nine points— only one moro could nave
been scored, as two is tho highest number that can be
scored for any shot at this range. It was only tho 400
yards that beat Chappie, as it will be seen that he was
six ahead of Macartney at tho first two ranges. Tbo
Advertiser of Tuesday g|ve.i tho following corrections
of. the above ecoVo: — Mr. W. Nicholas's score
?was erroneously inserted na 18 in our last;
it should liava been 10. Ho was third
nest in the match, and second best at 400 ynrds,
thereby winning second prize in sweepstakes at that
range. His steady aim for bo youncr a shot was much
admired. Mr. W. J. Ball's scoro of 13 was inadvertently
omitted. No. 8 Company's shots are about challenging
a selection of those from Nos. 1 and 2.

with bis other staff duties. This intimation is subject
to the approval of H. R. H. tho General commanding
in-cliief.
A New Voltjutheii Corps.— It !b reported that
several influential gentlemen nro organising an Artil
lery Volunteer Corps in London whioh will consist of
colonists who are natives of the Weat Indies, tho Capo
of Good Hope, Austral!*, Now Zealand, British North
America, and other dependencies of tho Crown. Tho
correspondent of tho Gtelong Advertiicr, however, Biys
ho knows that tho leading Australians are totally
ignorant of the movement, and it is probably tho
invention of eomo ponny-a-llncr.

The Datlbsford Rirr.it Conrs. — Tho Express says :
— ' Tho Daylosford corps still continues actively at
drill, snd . »re nevr becoming tolerably efficient. Mr.
Trazer, when in Daylosford tbo other day, promised to
urge upon the attention of tha Government, the neces
sity for furnishing tho rifles so long promised at once,
and also tho matter of uniforms. In connection with tho
corps, n band is about being formed, and subscriptions
nearly sufficient for purchasing tho necessary instruments
are already promised, and so soon as a band master is
found, the practice of the band will commence ; so that
wo may almost expect to seo tho first open-air drill ac
companied by music.''
. Besdioo Volunteer Riple Conrs. — ' On Thurs
day, the 8th instant,' s»ys tho Bendigo Advertiser,
'tho staff Impection by Captain l'itt, and general
parndo of tho Voluntoer Corps, was held in the Camp
Reserve. Delightful weather, nnd tho interest with
?which tight. Boers alwnys invest tho appearance of eol
diers, combined to attract a largo seotion ot the com
munity — including many of its fair members — to tha
Reserve, which looked, in contequenco, nnuBUnily
* lively and gay. The tbreo companies of the corps,
drawn up in front of tho Treasury, were first put
thronirh Eomo of Iho ordinary evolutions In tho way of
marching in lino, by companios and sections, by their
commanding officer, Captain Anderson, who came from
Dunoliy for tho occasion. Tho men afterwards hid
their arms and accoutrements inspected by Captain
Pitt, the offioor appointed by Government for that pur
pose. This being over, tha regiment, with tho drum
and fife bind at its hoad, was marched through tho
town and back to the Reserve, where it was ditiulFEcd.
the appearance of tho men, both on parade nnd as they
marched through tho streets, was tbo subject of general
admiration, and fully merited the compliment paid to
their drill by Captain Pitt. During tho parade of the
regulars, n troop of ho»e made ita nppoarance on the
(rround, which, from tho semi-military costumo adoptod
-by tho riders— half Garibnldlan, half stock rider— gave
lisa tn inquiries as to tho sourco whence they sprung,
.and their objoct, whloh were afterwards explained by
the Information that they formed a portion of the
Sandhurst troop of tho It. V. V. Cavalry Uegimont.
Their prcjonco, however, at a field parade of tlio rc;u
Jnrs, was oonaidored rather out of plaoo. Mounted, for
tha most, on hacks of the sorriest and most bare-boned
rozlnante description, one trooper in uniform, another
/with a sword, a third with a sabretusch - tinging a Btlck,
and, with the beforo-mcutioned exception, all in tlioir
ordinary habiliments, tho Sandhurst troop, if they (lid
, slot recall to recollection a famous corps which a great
Phaksperlan captain flatly relused to march through
Coventry with, ccit&tely rociited thn suggestion of a
? hvetauder, that by their follow soldiers on foot they
o'nsht to bo tent there. Surely they might havo
curbed their anxietr to appear on pnrado until they
'?wore hotter mounted, and had get their military uni
form, unless, indeed, they came on parade for the pnr
po*a of ' keeping Iho ground,' wbiob, in the \r»y that
oortaln figures are elevated to keep people off corn
field*, tioy were admirably adapted for.'
Qbeloho Rivlb Match.— A match for a short En
fold rifla, valuo £8, open to all comers, fivo shilling!
entry money, was shot for at the Goelong butts on
Saturday last. The distances wero 400, 500, and GOO
yards, five ronnda each. Thero wero twenty-two
competitors, two only being civilians. The prize was
won by Privato J. B. Hutton, of tho G. V. R. B., who
mado a total ccoro of fifteen points. There wero two
ties of twelvo and three, of ten points. A strong wind
was blowing across tha rango during tho match. On
tho whole the scoring was good for the ranges nnd tho
state of tho weather. Tho winner of tho rifle made a
splendid score, and in another match nt 700, was only
beaten by Colonel Redo, whoso shooting wa3 steady,
and quite worthy of first placo.
BENDIQO ? \OLUNTEER COURT OP INQUIRY. —
The Sandhurst Bee says that on Tuesdny lnet a military
court, consisting of Capt »ins Pitt (start officer), Sprent
(Collingwood Rifles), nnd Stewart (Willinmstown Hides),
sat at the orderly mom, to take evidenco concerning n
ohargolaid by Volunteer Privato James Ren against
Captain Eastwood, of No. 2 Company, in a letter
published in tho Bendigo Advertiser, accusing
film of 'conduct unworthy of an otflcor or n
Roiitlcman.' We do not know the merits of tho case,
bnt bolieve that Mr. Kca has been Invited to apologiso
nnd let the matter drop, but elected to defend tho ac
cusation. What tho Tcsult of the Inquiry is, wo cannot
sny, bat shall probably hear In n few days. Mr. Dvvyer,
who was tried by a court-martini some tinio since, on
chnrgeB of insubordination, is hanging in susponse, not
yet knowing tho result of tho inquiry.
Calling-out tub Volunteers.— Wo (tho Mount
Alexander Hail) hnvo received tho following 'opinion'
from an auonymons authority at Kyneton. Wo pro
eumc it has been elicited by our remarks on the
' command and requirement' made in the calling out
of tho Kyneton troop by tho local magistrate, in
nnti ipation of riots at Woodend by tho railway
Insurers:— ' Justices aro nuthorisod to require the
immediato attendance of nny body of military which
loay be qnarterod near at hand, to assist in quelling n
riot. But tho Justice is not bound to go with tho
military— It is enough II ho pives them authority. Tho
King v. the Mayor of Bristol 3 B. nnd Ad. 017.' We
can form no ostimnto ol thn vnluo of this opinion ; but
wo should liko to know if tho volunteers aro ' military'
within the menning of the case cited.
Carlton Riplk Comi-any.— Tho nnnnal moetinpr of
the Cnrlton Hiflo Company w»a hold on Wednesday
ovenintr last, in tho orderly room, Grattan street. Mr.
Kadcliffe , the captain ol the company, occupied tho
chair, and about sevonty members of tho compony wero
present. Tho most important part of tho business re
ierrort to tho financinl position of the company, nnd n
stMotnent was made that a earn of £300 had been sub
scribed by the numbers of the company for the ereotion
of tho orderly room, for tho band, and for other pur
poses, which left the company bnt a comparatively small
amount in doht. After tho moro serious portion of the
business nan disposed of, tho meeting assumed » con
vivial turn, and tho healths of the principal members of
tlie company wero pledged in champagne. Amongst the
the toasts that wore proposed wero thoso of Captain nnd
Mrs. Radcliflo, Colonel Pitt, tho non-commls'ioned offi
cers, and the nrizo takers, winch wcro all enthusiastically
responded to. Some discussion took plare about a- pro
position to havo a ball in connection with tho company,
but by consent it was postponed for a month, until the
company obtainod its new uniform.
Adelaide Challenge Match— A match, resulting
from a challenge given by the Sturt and Brighton com
pany, and taken up by the Freo Rifles, camo off at the
butt, South Park Lands, on Saturday, tho 10th inst. The
weather was both showery and cold, a very strong wind
blowing from tbo N. W. and W. during tho whole of the
day. The number of competitors were 12 on each side,
and the distances 900, 700, £00, and 300 yards, fivo
rounds per man at each range. Private Coleman nnd
Privato J. B. Jones, of tho Free Rifles, each scored four
points at 900 yards. Private Burden, of the same com
pany, scored nvo points, J. B. Jones and Privato Heath
four* each, and Coleman two, at 700 yards. Tho highest
Ecoro made by the Sturt and Brighton Rifles at 900 yards
was by Privato Palmer, who mado three points: Private
Palmer and Private Turner also mado three points at 700
yards. The total score by tho I'reo Rifles was 1G0, and
by the Start and Brighton Rifles 129. The former wero
therefore tho winners by 37 points, being rather more
than three points per man over the average of their op
ponents.
Qu'Jemscliff Volustebhs. — The Queenscliflf volun
teers a short timo since unanimously expressed a desiro
to enlist under tho banner of Colonel Anderson, and
become part and parcel of the Royal Artillery. They
may now be xaid to belong to that regiment, as the
transfer officially took placo on Friday last. On that
day Coionol Anderson, accompanied by Colonel Reid,
ono stall' officer, and tha sergeant major, dressed in full
uniform, took charge of the corps, and ull stores, etc.,
belonging to it. Wheu it became known that such was
the mission of tho colonel tho company turned out in
full muster, with the exception of those absent on duty,
to givo him a good wolcomo. Tho reception on both
sidus appeared to give mutual satisfaction. After in
specting the nrms, before teking them over, Colonel
Anderson addressed the corps as follows : — Gentlemen, —
From what I have jaat now observed, nnd from what I
sawatthoWerribce, I am perfectly satisfied that you are
efficient in your small arm drill, but it is equally essen
tial that you should bo perfect in the gun diill. To this
I cannot impress upon you too much to givo yeur utmost
attention, it will bo tho chief drill in which you will bo
called upon to perform at this place; tho guns are on
tho way out for tbo batteries here, and may be said to
be the finest in tho world, being Armstrong's rifle bore of
1001b. Such gans in my time I have never seen, but
thoso which are on tho platform for the uee of practice
aro well suited to givo you a perfect knowledgo of the
nun exercise, and all those who have not learned this
drill will not bo allowed to enter the fort to handle tho
new guns. Captain Robertson informs mo that many of
you have had but little or no experience of the guns in
consequence of want of ammunition ; in futnre this will
be no excuse, as I will see you have plenty of both pow
der and shot. It was my intention to havo
marched you to tho guns to havo instructed
you in their use, but as I h»vo to return
to-night, I am sorry I will not have time to
do so, and will merely confine myself to putting you
through a few evolutions of field practice. It will also
benecessary that Sergeant Gunn, in whoml havo a very
high opinion, should proceed to Melbourne for ono
month to receive a further knowledge of the uso of tho
largo gun drill, and during his absence I shall send you
another instructor. I may alio state that tho members
of the artillery in Mclbourno are highly pleased with tho
addition of tho QueonsclilT corps to their number, and
I am certain when you become more acquainted you
will be pleased with each other. With referenco to the
uniform, if you prefer the whito bolts you can have them ;
but probably amongst so many sea-going men, who
aro generally adverse to the handling of pipeclay, this
may not meet tho general wish of the corps. However,
this will rest with yourselves. You can also havo the
bushy cap ; but hereafter you will be pleased to make
known your decision upon thoso changes to Captain
Robertson, and should you approve of them, you shall
hire them forthwith,' Ho then put the corps through
a few evolutions, after which he called Captain Robert
son to take command, watching attentively the actions
ot both officers and men. Drill being over, ho again ad
dressed the corps ns follows:— 'Officers and gentlemen
of the qtirwisclift' Artillery,— As I stated before that I
wns prepared to receive a well disciplined corp3, I havo
watched attentively all tho various evolutions
which you havo gono through) nnd it is grati
fying for mo to stato that I think you second
to none in the colony. I had no idea that you had such
a perfect knowledge of small arm drill, especially that
of skirmishing; had I known so at tho Werriboe, I
should havo availed myself in drilling you along with tho
Williamstown artillory, which was the only corps that
1 knew bad a knowledge of such a drill, although very
imperfect. I shall in the courso ofa month be here, and
if you can spare me half a day of your time — say on a
Saturday afternoon— I shall drill you in tho uso of tho
largo guns with ball cartridge: and I should liko such
practice to tako place monthly for somo time. When
you become acquainted with tho drill you will feel a
pleasure in attending. I shall inform Captain Robert
sou of my intention of coming down. Again I must
express my gratification at seeing you so efficitnt in your
drill.' Tim Colonel then loft, accompanied by Colonel
Reid, for Geelong, in a buggy. On departing from
QuecnsclifT, Colonel Anderson received three hearty cheers
from tho company, signifying thnt he carried with him
the full confidence of tho corps.
