The Miiit Robbery.
THE MYSTERY UNSOLVED.
Melbourne, Saturday.
Though the detectives have been busily
engagad endeavoring to solve the mystery of
the Mint robbery no progress in that direction
has been made. The detectives are now
strongly of opinion that the gold has been taken
away.
One suggestion is that the robbery may have
been perpetrated by means of a key made from
a model or impression of that in the possession
of the deputy master of the Mint. Mr E.
Staufield Wardell, the Deputy Master, how
ever, says that it was impossible for anyone to
have got possession of the key of the police
safe in his charge. No oue could got access to
the key except himself, or in the event of his
being- on leave the officer who takes his place.
M r Warded admitted that if the other parcels
i of gold in registered packets addressed to the
Mint- had beeu stolen the Mint authorities would
probably have made good the loss. There was,
however, a marked distinction uetwoen parcels
of gold left by the postman and parcels left by
other people. It was not proposed to make any
further arrangement for tho safeguarding of
gold brought to the institution after hours.
It was improbable, however, that any more
registered parcels would be taken after hours in
future The amount of gold received after
hours is not large. Only 204 parcels have been
received iu 20 years.
