ELDORADO.
from our own correspondent.
Considerable damage has been done to
the Cock's Pioneer mine on account of
the heavy rain. On Sunday the creek
rose, to within a few inches of the top of
the' dam, and all hands were summoned,
but at about 4.30 in the afternoon the
water was found to be rapidly rising, and
at last burst the dam. The inrush was
terrific, some of the employes having the
greatest difficulty in escaping from the
paddock, as it flowed in at such a rate, it
being about 60yds. wide and having a
depth of 3ft. It presented a magnificent
spectacle as it rushed over the bank to a
fall of 70 feet. The barge could not
stand the strain of the waters, which
broke all the ropes, excepting one — the
electric and telegraph wires. The No. 2
barge was completely submerged. The
extent of damage done has not yet been
ascertained. The Spread Eagle barge
(owned by Mr. Fletcher, of Beechworth)
was carried about half a mile down the
creek, and would have been carried
much further had not a heap of tailings
barred its progress. In addition to the
above both bridges and the McEvoy dam
have been completely washed away.
