Or. HUTHERLA5D paid hfe coOeagne
cd Bsn»-«tha tribato of rtepect. He
as yjttj Cr. O'Connor -ans gomg away.
He bad worked wish him as a coancfQor
for many years, and they bad travelled
I0117 distances together. Sometimes they
h/Tbad to fight in their endeavor to carry
oat tie ratepayers' baefaeee. Bat no
matter what had been raid, tbsy had
always gone arway from the coemrii table
good friends during the 9 or 10 years they
had sat side by side as councillors. He
was very sorry Cr. Cr Connor was parang
from them. The president hoped to see
him back again, but he (Cr. Sutherland)
hoped Cr. O'Connor would getn so well
as not to need to return. At the council
table his colleague bad always given hi
rote fearlessly, and never shows i par
tiality. (Applause.)
Cr. COSiOLLY thoroughly endorsed
the remarks of previous speakers with
regard to Cr. O'Connor. He was loeing a
good colleague and a good friend and
neighbor, and the ratepayers a good re
presentative. He hoped that whatever
sphere of life Cr. O'Connor filled he would
be successful.
Cr. CLC5E endorsed the sentiments
already ezpreeaei. He believed Cr. O'Con
nor always obeyed the dictates of con
science at the council table, and he was
respected accordingly. He, too, wished
hlta every success in his future life.
Cr. CLUTIERBUCK spoke in a
rlmllar strain of eulogy, believing Cr.
O'Connor to be etraighforward and con
scientious. His going would be a great
fosa to Barnawartba, Yackandandah and
Klewa, which could 111 afiord to lose lte
old pioneers. (Hear, hear.) He hoped
the time was not far distant when Cr.
O'Connor would be able to retire from
business and come back and resume his
seat at the council. (Applause.) Ttiev
might have a good man In Cr. O'Connors
place bnt not to good as Cr. O'Connor.
The old pioneera were the beet class of
mr>, If it was not for them to district
would not be what it was. He wished
Cr. O'Connor all kinds of luck. If Or.
dntherland was going away he would
wish him good luck and a thumping big
family. ( bond laughter.)
Cr. H0DG805 had not known Or.
O'Connor loDg, bnt regarded him as a
thorough man. He had carried out his
duties in a etralghtforward manner, and
had done iaetlce not only to Barnawartba
bnt also to the whole shire. He wished
Or. O'Connor success at Fllzroy, and that
be would live bo be mayor of thac place.
Cr. O'CONNOR, who was well re
ceived, reciprocated the beaatiful senti
ments that had been expressed towards
him. He did not expect it, and it sprang
as a surprise upon him. He could
assnre his colleagues that the words
they had uttered were highly appre-
ciatsd by him. He had been very nearly
12 years amongst them, having succeeded
Mr. J. Smith, now deceased, as Barna-
wartha'a representative, and during that
time he received every courtesy and assist-
ance from his colleagues, and It had been a
great pleasure to work with them. He
had always tried to take a straight course
and do his dnty, and was guided by the
dictates of his own conscience. A person
might make a mistake, but if he obeyed
his conscience ho would not go very far
astray. At the same time he had to yield
bo the will of the majority. Regret had
been expressed at his leaving, but in any
case, even if he bad not sold out, he wonld
be leaving the council In Angust next.
He hoped he had succeeded in pleasing
the ratepayers. He sometimes heard un
kind things said abont councillors, bnt
they couldn't please everybody. If they
could satisfy the majority they most be
satisfied. He felt it a great compliment to
have been allowed to represent the rate
payers so long. He also praised the officers
of the conndl for the assistance they had
given him, and withont which he
could not have got along so. well.
He had been hard on the offioeke, bat
that had been neceasary in the interests
of necessary economy. He waa sorry it
had been necessary to retrench them, and
were he remaining a little longer wonld
hare moved to have the secretary's salary
increased, u he considered the secretary
