VIOLENT FOOTBALL BARRACKERS
CONSTABLE ASSAULTED AT
COLLINGWOOD.
At the half time interval of the match
at Collingwood on Saturday there was the
usual rush for liquid refreshment to the
hotels in Johnston-street. The Yarra
Hotel in Abbotsford, the nearest hotel to
the ground, was besieged by a number of
thirsty souls. While watching there in
plain clothes Constable Proudfoot's atten-
tion was attracted to the conduct of a
man, and he proceeded to arrest him. The
man resisted violently, and several of his
companions joined in the struggle, and
struck the constable, who had a very rough
time, several of his teeth being broken.
However, he stuck to his man, and with
the assistance of Constable Canavan, who
came up during the disturbance, brought
the man to the lockup. The man, who
gave the name of Frederick Homans, aged
30, was locked up on charges of insulting
behavior and resisting arrest. He will be
brought before the local court this morning.
Constable Proudfoot was rather severely
hurt in the affray.
