LAND SETTLEMENT.
FINANCES OF CARRUM.
The members of the Water Commission
express themselves as well satisfied with
the result of the collections made in the
Carrum water works district. The amount
of old arrears has been reduced to £500,
as compared with a sum of £2700 outstand-
ing three years ago. At the same time the
commission feels that in justice to those
who have paid it is necessary to take legal
proceedings for the recovery of the overdue
£500, and it has issued instructions that
a summons shall be served on each of the
defaulters within the next fortnight. The
improvement in the financial position is at
tributed to the fact that the residents re
cognise that in the general reduction of the
amount of rate in the pound the commis
sion is endeavoring fairly to meet the situa
tion. It is estimated that the amount of
rate has been reduced in each division, and
it has now readied a figure which is just
sufficient to keep the district in a proper
state of repair.
