THER.M.S. Oruba, of tho Orient line, from Lon
don, left Adelaide at 7 p. in. on Monday night, and
is due In the Bay this morning. She will be berthed
at Port Melbourne.
The German mail steamer Ilohenzoilorn, from
Bremeu, is expected this morning. Shu will be
berthed at the railway pier, Port Melbourne.
Tjie s. Gulf of Mexico, one of the huge cargo car
riers flying the house Hag of the Gulf Line Associa
tion, arrived from London last night, and
anchored off the railway pier, Port Melbourne.
The Gulf of Mexico is a well appointed
vessel, and her comfortable amidships saloon
is generally cccupled by passengers, On this
occasion, however, there were very few calls for
berths, and the Mexico came away with cargo only.
The steamer is commanded by Captain W. Warden,
who has with him as deck officers Messrs. S. J.
Farrell, A. G Elmslie and J. A. Rankin. The
engineer is Mr. Gordon, and the duties of chief
ste ward are discharged by Mr. Nixon. The
weather experienced on the voyage was generally
boisterous, but although the steamer was
deep in tho water she behaved well.
The voyage was commenced on the 6th March,
and called at Portland for coal. A supply was ob
tained, and at 9 a.m. on 8th March the steamer wits
on her voyage. To tho Channel the weather was
fine, but tlie passage through the Bay of Biscay was
marked by squally weather. Las Palmas was
reached on the 14th March and left on the same
evening. ' Fine weather and light N.JC. winds
were experienced to 6 north, and then light
southerly airs to the equator, crossed in
8 west. The S.JS. trades were fresh to 23
south, where they culminated in a heavy gale. A
terrific sea soon ran, and very little progress was
made. The gale lasted for five days, and during
that time the main deck was like a half tide rock.
The Cape of Good Ilopc was rounded on the night
of the bill ult., and moderate breezes veering from
N.W. to S.W. were met with to 80 east.
The steamer then experienced a second turn of
dirty-weather, and had to contend against heavy
galea up to 120 east. Thence to Adelaide light
winds prevailed. A good quantity of cargo was
discharged at Adelaide, and at 3 p.m. on 30th
ult. the voyage was resumed, and moderate
southerly breezes were experienced lip to Cape
Northumberland, where tho steamer ran into a
heavyj gale accompanied by a high sea. The
steamer was kept head to sea for 15 hours and made
very bail weather. The waves washed right over
her, and did considerable damage to the deck fit
tings. The bolts to which the lashings of the
anchor were made fast were torn out of the deck,
ami the ventilators at No. 4 hold were lost. On
Sunday night one 6( the wheel chains was carried
away, anu the repairs were only made with groat
difficulty. A quantity of sulphuric acid which was
stored on deck was knocked adrift, and the acid had
to be thrown overboard.
The s. Flinders, from the north-west coast ports
of Tasmania, arrived yesterday. She left Devon-
port at 2.30 p.m. on Monday, Emu Bay the same
day, and arrived here ut 11 a.m. yesterday. Mode
rate S.B. winds were experienced across the
straits.
The Duckenfield arrived last night with a
cargo of coal from Newcastle.
The bq. Mieiield. iu ballast, for Newcastle, was
towed to sea last night.
The following steamers left the Bay yesterday
Darcoo, for Sydney ; Innamincka, for Adelaide ;
Norkoowa, for Newcastle ; Manapouri, for New
Zealand; and Bullarra, for West Australia.
The s. Taviuni arrived ut WiUiamstown at 11
I >.m. on the 2nd inst. from Suva. Shu left the
atter port on the 23rd ult., and mot with tine
weather until after passing Uabo at 11 turn, on the
1st, when a strong S. W. gale sprang up. Passed
Wilson's Promontory at 11 a.m. on the 2nd, and
Arrived as above.
