REPORT of EXAMINERS:
"Tbe papers set comprised 12 questions in each
subject. In musical grammar there were 12 candi
dates, all of whom passed with "credit, the hltrbcst
number of questions answered being 12 and the
lowest 10. The examiners being asked to 3et an extra
difficult paper of seveu questions (for exccllenco), tho
12 candidates passed, eight of them giving as many as
six and a half correct answers. In harmony (seniors)
there were five candidates, all of whom passed with
credit, the highest number of questions answered
being 11 and tho lowest 10. In harmony (juniors)
as far as the chord of the dominant 7th inclusive,
there were six candidates, alt of whom passed. In
- classical and znodora pianoforte playing, tbrce candi
dates performed each three etudes by Chopin and the
fantasia in F sharp minor by Mendelssohn, displaying
a very high degree of excellence. Three other (junior)
candidates also passed well in classical pianoforte,
playiugthe fantasia In F sharp minor by Mendelssohn.
Selections from sonatas, Ac., by Beethoven, Mozart.
Mendelssohn, and a fugue by Bach, Ac., were well
and intelligently read a: eight. The examiners havo
great pleasure in testifying to tho high degree of ex
cellence displayed in the pianoforte performances
(especially by Miss C. Atchison. Miss Alice King
ana Miss Deakin), and to the highly satisfactory
manner In which papers in musical grammar and
harmony of more than average length and difficulty
were answerod by all tho candidates, most of whom
gave from 26 to 29£ correct answers to 31 questions.
Not one candidate failed to pass. All passed with
credit, and ten with excellence. Tho tbrce ladies
abovouamed are recommended by the examiners for
the certificate of the tichool of Music, which, con
sidering the high aud difficult character of the exami
nations, may be regarded as an honorable distinction.
In the opinion of the examiners, tho highly efficient
methods of the .school have in these examinations
been evidenced in a manner that entitles tho institu
tion to the confluence and support of the public, as
being both a credit to tlie energetic prluelpal arid a
great benefit to students of musical art lu the
colony.
