THE BALLARAT REGATTA.
Rowing Committee—Messrs A. Mongredien, W. A.
Orr, P. Cazaly, J. T. Sleep, and G. Moore.
The regatta which took place on Lake Wendouree
on Wednesday, was a great success, both as regards
the entries, the .quality of the rowing, and the interest
attached to it. After the long period during which
Lake Wendouree has been dry, the regatta was such a
novelty that crowds hocked to see .it, and on Wednes
day afternoon there could hot have , been less than
4000 or 5000 persons'around the margin of the lake
near the boat-houses. Notwithstanding the growth of
rushes over the Swamp, both the old and new
channels were quite clear, giving a good clear course
of about two miles and a half, from the boat-houses,
up the new channel, across from the bridge to Brace’s,
and then down the old channel tj the starting point.
This was the course in all the races, in which the dis
tance was set down as about two miles, the miles
being, to say the least of them; of Hibernian extrac
tion. .In, the shorter races the starting point was from
opposite Brace’s .Oriental hotel, the course
being down the old channel? to the boat
houses. The rowing course was distinctly marked
out with pink _ flags at short intervals all the way
round, so r that if mistakes were made the competitors
owty had themselves to blame for not having kept a
better look-out ahead. v

water. It was decided by the committee, to whom
the protest was referred, that the race should 1
rowed over again, and, both gentlemen agreoin.. to
this. 10 o clock tffia morning was fixed as the hour
It was stated that during the race, both Mr Orr awl
Mr Jones went insule one of the posts, and that 31r
Qrr went hack and made good his error, while Mr
Jones did not. The race yesterday was a 'tight ore
and both men were hacked to win. The result»
close enough to show that neither can afford "to give
the otbor the smallest advantage; so this morniiw's
contest will probably be a good one. °
A protest was also entered in connection with the
Senior. Pair-oared race. Wilkie and Uopo aceiuo.
Bennett and Orr of fouling at a critical part of tliu
race, and Williams and Cazaly accuse both the oilier
crews of fouling. The committee met to adjudicate
upon the protests last night, and decided that the
Senior Scullers Race should be rowed awain. Messrs
Orr and Jones, by consent, fixed a quarter-past ten
on Thursday morning. Protests in the Senior Pair
oar Race against Messrs Orr and Bennett were : decided
against them, and tho prize was awarded to the
University crew, Messrs Hope and Wilkie.
