MELBOURNE SHAKSPEARE
SOCIETY, .
The usual 1 meeting of the- above society in
honor of. the poet's birthday was held on Satur
day 'evening, in the Austral Salon, Collins-
street, when- there wasa very large nttoudauco
of members despite the inclement weather. The
president,. BIr. A. S. Way, Bl.A., in tho course
of an address, remarked that this was the tenth
of such meetings held by the society, wIuoIlwah
now in a very vigorous and flourishing condition.
The principal feature of tho programme was a
lecture1 by BIr. Frank Tate, B;A., on the Songs
of Shakspcnre, illustrated by the singing of the
songs by a ohoir of friends and members of the
society, under the conductorsliip of BIr. W. R:
Furlong. The lecturer described the various
causes which led up to tho great outburst of
song literature in the Elizabethan period, and
discussed the poiuts of excellence in the Shak-
spearian songs soleoted for illustration. Tho
requisites of the true song were pointed out And
also the shortcomings of the modern drawing-
room song as to the composition of the poetry.
During the evening tho Rev. John Re id rendtho
report of tho recent examination in Shnkapenre
held by the society, l'ho work proscribed was a
complete study of Julius Caesar and Brookes's
Elizabethan Vravuu Twenty-four candidates
competed, and of these only one re
ceived below 50 per. cent, of marks. The
results were, highly satisfactory, and showed
that the society was doing good work in
encouraging the study of Shnkspeare among the
young, people of Victoria. Five handsomo prizes,
consisting of Shalcspearian literature, were then
presented to the successful competitors in the
following order (maximum marks 400) 1st
prize, Bliss Lilian Bnird, 363 marks ; 2nd prize,
Miss Alice Bnle, 355 marks ; 3id prize, Bliss N.
Connell, 347 marks; 4th prize, Miss Macmillnn,
332 marks; 5th prize, Miss S. Anderson, 331
marks; honorable mention, Miss O. Pfantd,
Bliss A. PI ante, Bliss Lowers, Bliss Roxburg and
BIr. J. P. Hoiden, who all obtained over 75 per
cent
