MATCH.
VICTORIA V. NEW SOUTH WALES.
VICTORY FOR NEW SOUTH WALES.
Fourth Day, Tuesdat. isiit January.
Tho contest between tlio crickotcrs of "Victoria
and Now South "Wales was continued and
finished yostqrday, tho result boing a victory
for Now South Wales with six wickets to spore.
At the oloso of the play on Slonday New South
Wales, witli one wicket down for 34, required
44 runs to win, aud the victory was accom
plished before luncheon time. Notwithstanding
tho comparatively easy task before
Moses and Richardson continued to ob
serve defensive tactics, and it wns not until
62 runs bad been registered that tho second
wicket fell. Jones made matters lively during
bis short stay, but was disposed of with 5 runs
still required to win, and Sfoses, who had played
an excellent and cautious innings for 43, got his
leg in front when another ruu had been soored.
SI'Donneil and Donnan remained together until
tho former had mndo tlio wiauing hit, aud New
South Wales, nfter striving gamely for n
majority of wins for 28 years, at length
achieved tho long desired honor. Oa
tho conclusion of tho match tho teams
wero again entertained at luncheon by the
Blellxmxno Cricket club, when the heartiest
reciprocations of friendship were exchanged.
The trophies given by tho SI. O.C. for batting
havo been' won by H. Donnan (New South
Wales) and J. D. Edwards (Victoria) and for
bowling by P. Charlton (Now South Wales) and
J. W.orrnll (Victoria). P. Lewis had by far the
best bowling nvermro on either side (three
wickets for 20 runs) but was not entitled to tho
trophy, having bowled only 60'balls, tlio mini
mum being 80.
Moses and Richardson, tho not out batsmen,
resumed their places at 20 minutes post II, to
the bowling of Bruco and Worrali. Caution
marked tho batting, only a singlo to each result
ing from tho first liulf dozen overs, and 10
minutes elapsing before Moses mado another
single off Bruee. In tlio samo over Bl'Ilwraith
in the slips. missed Richardson from tlio easiest
of chances off Brnce, and tho fourth single was
scored by Moses off Worrali. At tho timo of
Bl'Ilwraitli's mistake tho total stood at 37, of
which Rioliardson had made 7. Sloses drove
Bruce for 2 out of Drysdalc's roach nt mid-on,
and a couple of overs later hit him to long-on
for 4. Several maidens followed before Richard
son played Worrali neatly round to leg for 2,
followod by a singlo to each off Bruce,
which brought tlie total to 48, leaving
exactly 30 required to win. Trott relieved
Bruco, and started by bowling a wide, and
Riohardsou played AYorrall to square leg for 2,
followed by a single to Moses off 'Crott. Moses
skied Worrali over the bowler's head, but out of
danger, for 2, and got liim to square leg for a
singlo, prior to driving Trott to tho off' for a
couple aud a single. At 58 Lewis took tho ball
from Worrali, and Slosca placed his first to leg
for 1, repeating tho stroke nt Trott's expense,
which brought up 60, and again operating
similarly on Lewis, whom Richardson hit to tho
on for L The latter played Trott ou, nnd as ho
retired the board showed 2 — 14 — 62. Jones
followed, and a byo having boon rim Worrali
roplnoed Lewis, nnd Sfoses cut Trott for
1. Jones drovo the latter for 2, and
hit liim to leg for a single, leaving 10 runs re
quired" to lie. Jonas hit AVArrntl cleverly to
leg for 4, oil run, and skied him to tho on for 2,
Burton making a fine effort to effect a running
catch. Jane3 hit under tho next ball, and sky
ing it in front of tlio wioket was caught by tho
wiokotkeeper, Blaokhnm — 3—9 — 73. Douuan
joined Sloses and drovo Worrali for 1, but in
the same ovor Sloses was oiit l.b.w. — 4—43 — 74.
SI'Donnoll followed, and after skying AYorrall
for 2 won tho match by driving liim: to tlio oil
for another couple, tho winning hit boing mado
at 1.24.
