CRICKET.
south Melbourne v. '.Melbournb.
The dftb afternoon's play between tbo first
elevens of these two clubs took place on Saturday
at tbe South Melbourne cricket ground. The
interest which has been tasen in this match
was manifested by tho presence on the ground
of -several hundred" spectators. At the adjourn
ment oi the game the previous week the M.C.C.
score in the second innings stood, at 101 for two
wickets down ; MQIwraitu and Swift, not out,
hiving made respectively 46 and 5. Piay was
'resumed on Saturday, at 2.30, with these batsmen
at tbe wickets. During the first lioui or so the
batting was careful and steady, whilst Barrett,
Morris, M'Leod and Kemp each bad -a turn at the
bowling As the afternoon advanced both Swift
and M 'Li wraith hit out with greater confidence, and
the score was rising ranidly. when Swifts leg stump
was taken bva "yoikoi from M'Leod Three wickets
.down foi 194 The batsmen had been playing for an
hour and three-quarters, during which time
M'llwr&itb had made 45 and Swift 34 Ross then
went to the wickets to face the bowling of Trott.
His first ball he sent to leg for 4, and he made a
drive for 2 and a boundary hit in the same over,
sending 200 up amidst loud cheering At 224 Ross
was caught by Bowman, and Dickson took bis
Slace, who, howovet, gavo way to Duffy after the
rst ball from M'Leod. M'llwraUh still main
tained his position, raising his figures steadily
by the same excellent cricket which distinguished
the whole of his -innings. The careful mannet
in which he placed his hits found out the weak
places in the South Melbourne fielding and elicited
repeated applause. At 5 o'clock ho completed his
century, and immediately afterwards Duffy was
caught by /Morris off Trott s bowling Curr was
disposed of for 8 runs, and was succeeded by
Morris ; some vigorous batting ensued, and the
figures mounted apace, when a disaster took place,
in tbe shape of a ball from M'Leod, which took
M1!! wraith s wicket, aud the famous batsrodn re
tired for.a well earned total of 132. Eight wickets for
299. A smart catch by Slight removed Morris from
tbe wicket/and the tenth man was bowled shortly
afterwards for n total score of 303. The lime was
too far advanced foi any further play, so wbeo the
game ia rcsuraed next Saturday South Melbourne
will have tbelt second innings before them, and 84
runs to make to ensure a victory. The following
