The defeat in the House of Commons on
.Wednesday of Mr. John Morley's motion
censuring Mr. Balfour, Chief Secretary for
Ireland, for his alleged maladministration,
was followed to-day by another attack
on the Government, made by Sir William
Vernon Hnrcourt, another of Mr. Gladstone's
principal supporters. Sir William I-Iarcourt
moved a motion censuring Sir Richard
Webster for having, whilst holding the
position of Attorney-General, also acted as
leading counsel for the Times in connection
with the investigation beforo the special
commission of the charges brought by that
journal against Mr. Parnell and other Irish
members. Ho characterised the action of
Sir Richard Webster in this matter as not
merely unbecoming but indecent.
A very heated debate took place on the
motion, in which several members of the
Parnellite party vehemently denounced the
. condnct of the Attorney-General, and
numerous violent scenes tool: place. .
The motion was ultimately rejected by a
majority of 80 votes.
