The Member for West Maitland
and the Flood.
The member for West Maitland, Mr. John
Gillies, was in Sydney, as has been stated above,
till Saturday evening. He was, however, kept
fully acquainted with the sad state of affairs in
Maitland by means of messages from Messrs. P
Clay, Henry Crothers, J. W. Pender, and R. Ross.
These gentlemen sent lengthened messages, detail-
ing the incidents of the rise, regretting Mr. Gillies'
absence at the critical time, and asking him to
inform Mr. Young. On Thursday Alderman
Crothers received the following messages from
Mr. Gillies :
In the absence of our Mayor the Attorney-
General empowers you with Police assist-
ance to supply urgent cases with blankets and food.
Get same from local stores. Boats have been
ordered from Newcastle. The Government are
meeting us splendidly. Rely upon me seeing our
people provided for in their trouble."
Have been in constant attendance upon the
Government all night in the interests of the people
of our district, all my requests for help being
carried out promptly. I cannot express my feelings
in regard to this threatened calamity. In the
absence of the Mayor and myself, I know you and
your brother aldermen will do your best during
this ordeal.
