Franklin» Reclamation Works. — Our
Franklin .correspondent, writing" in connect-on
with the a-ccident to the retaining
wad, says: tt is stated that the Public
Wcrks Committee Intends visiting Franklin
this week to carry out an inspection.
Outside the drying factory are to be seen
hundreds of 18-inch bolts, nails and a
sack of witshers. ail going to rust, and
which are said to have been sent down
for the work. It seems apparent that, in
calculating the strength of the wall necessary,
the sand should have been taken
into consideration. How far it Is -a. fact
that the authorities are surprised to find
that the bed of the river is mainly sand
no one can tel^ but it would certainly
seem that one of the first things In connection
with such construction wcu.d be
to ascertain the material upou which tue
work had to be done.

yesterday, before Mr. Justice Crisp, in
the matter of Webster and Sons V. Cotton,
an appeal from the decision of the Commissioner
in the Court of Requests, sji
older was made on an application by Mr.
Prlngle fixing the security to be lodged

Consumptives' Sanatorium. — Some
months ago Mr. George Shields, the general
secretary of the United Ancient Order
of Dru.ds. while on a visit to Hobart,
interviewed the secretary of the saiutorium,
and suggested, in reply to tu appeal
made to them, that a request for
donations should be sent to all the members
of the order in Tasmania. Arrangements
were accordingly made, and the application
has met with most gratifying results,
inasmuch as the general secretary
has forwarded the sum of £50 co'l'ected
from all the branches of the Tasmanian
Druids throughout the State. This donation,
in face ot the onerous burdens of|
the war undertaken by friendly societies
to benefit their members, is very satisfactory.
It must also be borne in mind
that, in addition to this sum, £22 has
1 this year been
forwarded by the other
societies.
Last year approximately £100
