The barque St Brycedale sailed from Foochow on
the 17th July, crossed the Equator in 161 E.
Stewart s Island, or rather islands (there being five
of them close together, and surrounded by reefs),
was made at night on the 12th September, and the
natives, a most harmless and hospitable race, having
observed the ship approaching, lighted large fires, as
a caution. When within about 4 miles of the land
several canoes came alongside, and a native handed
Captain Pierce a letter or rather a certificate from
the captain and owner of the barque Bessie, which
stated that the ship was from China, bound for Aus-
tralia, and had made the Australian coast in the vici-
nity of Keppel Bay, having been driven to leeward
by heavy easterly weather, being short of provisions
and water, and the crew ill and incapable of work-
ing, he had determined to bear up for Stewart's Island.
On his arrival the natives had carried his anchor out
and laid it on the reef, had conveyed his sick crew
ashore, and carefully attended to their wants. After
assisting in repairing the ship, they had supplied her
with such provisions as the islands afforded, and
that he had sailed again , but whether he had gone
back to China or continued his voyage, Captain
Pierce cannot recollect. The second officer, who read
the letter, is also uncertain as to where the vessel
left for, but is under the impression that it stated
she would resume her voyage, and that the signature
was Garwood or Barwood. Tne fact of Captain
Pierce having to be on deck, with so many natives
on board, and the reefs being close under his lee,
prevented more than a hasty glance at the document
so that the master's name and the date on which it
was written hare been forgotten. The natives re-
mained on board about half an hour, and were
pressing in their endeavours to persuade Captain
Pierce to remain until daylight which he did not
deem it prudent to do, but dismissed them with pre-
sents of fish hooks and such clothing as could be
hastily collected. They also reported that the pre-
vious night 11th September, they had heard the re-
port of a big gun This would probably be the U.
