I THE WILLIAMS ELECTOKATE.
DECLARATION OF THE POLL.
{Irom o Dungog correspondent.)
The declaration of the poll, at noon on Friday, was
characterised by the best of oonduot and feeling.
Mr. BURDBKIN, the successful candidate, in returning
thanks tor the unexpected amount of support accoided to
bim, deemed it advisable to request his constituent» to
moderate their expeotatlouB in reference to their local
requirements, by i «collecting that tim new Parliament
would not be in working order for somu month«, and that
the replenishment of the public Treasury would of neces-
sity auleoede the satisfaction of all hut very urgent
claims.
Mr MANTON, who commanded general admiration for
the manner in which he sustained bimaelf under defeat'
expressed his gratefulness to tlio large number of
electora who had voted for him, notwithstanding his pre-
vious unacquaintance with most oi them and his untried
abilities.
Mr. CLEAVER spoke as deputy for Mr. Allen, who had
started tor Sydney by the mail early in the morning.
Mr. WKST made a few lively remarks, although, as
nobody bad voted for him, he had nobody to thank.
A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer was moved
by Mr. MANTON, and seconded by Mr. UORDEKIN, who
stated that ho had never known the dutits lo be moro
efficiently discharged. The rote vas carried with accla-
mation, and acknowledged by Mr. HOLMES with sincere
thanks.
The proceedings were oloscd with three cheers for the
member elect, at the instigation of Mr. Manton; and
thies for the Queen, at the instigation of Mr. Burdekin.
Some of our Ben»ation friends would encourage the
notion that our electioneering contest has been coloured
by seotarian'animosities ¡ but the hollowness of fcueh an
idea is proved by the fuot that each of the candidates
numbered Catholics amongst their supporters, and the
greater number voted for the rery man who was expected
by the Bensationists to get few or none.
