Runners? Representative
Quite a stir 1b being caused In professional
foot-running circles at the
election fhat la to take place on Saturday
to select a representative of the
foot-runners on the Council ot the
Victorian Athletic League, Ballot
papers have been issued to all registered
runners. There are two seeking
election:—Mr John Davlne—who must
not be confounded with Jack Devino
(brother of Darcy), the former wellknown
runner; and Mr Joe Campbell,
president of the Victorian Runners'
Union (known as the Victorian Sports
Club), the secretary of which (Mr
Frank Crockett) has Inserted an advertisement
in this w«eli'fl Issue directing
attention to the fact that Mr
Campbell has been nominated by the
Runners' Union for tho vacant seat.
The poll closes with Mr Joe Bull, secretary
of the V.A.I*, 78 Union street,
Brunswick, on Saturday. Postal ballot
papers have been forwarded to all
registered runners affiliated with the
V.A.L.

There will he any number of peds not engaged

CHAMPIONS COMPETING
One of tho features of the Melbourne
Eight Hours' Day sports in
April will be the invitation handicap
foot raccs for V.A.L. runners. Tho
sports committee has decidod to run
two events—75 yards handicap anil
220 yards handicap, for which Tim
Banner, Frank Schultx, Charlie Milburn,
"Bill" Darby, Tom McCormlck
and other noted pedB havo been invited
to compete. It is also on the
cards that Tim Banner may make
another attempt to lower Donaldson's
100 yards record of 9 3-5 see. Last
year, on a wet track. Banner was
clocked to do 100 yds. in 10 sec., and
many declare that he will put up new
figures.
SPORTS AT HAY
Arrangements are well in hand for
the annual St. Patrick's Day sports to
be held on Wednesday. March 23, under
tho New South Wales Athletic
and Cycling Leagues. An Interesting
programme has been arranged, particulars
of which uppuar In our advertising
columns. Nominations will
closo on Saturday, March 12, with Milt.

LANE'S MENXOU
C. J. Lane, the Bt. Stephen's harrier
and former Public Schools sprint
champion runner, who won the Victorian
100 yards championship last
week in hollow style, has been under
the charge ot "Wallle" Beckwlth, a
well-known professional runner, who
has a long llpt of victories to his
credit, Including the sprint handicap
at Stawell in 1913 and 1916, a similar
event at Shepparton from 1916 :o
1913, and the Shepparton Gift In
191S. When Lane dashed past the
post as winner last week, Beckwlth,
overjoyed, threw his arms In the air,
saying, "Isn't he a beauty!"
