VAGABOND RANKS
HIGH IN DERBY
By "ASCOT"
Although the general opinion is that Carbon
Copy, who narrowly defeated Vagabond in the AJC
Derby, will find the Sydney colt easier prey at
Flemington, bookmakers won't be caught. They
have them equal favorites.
Vagabond's close second to
EUerslie In the mile Burwood
Handicap at Caulfield, plus the
fact that he's likely to improve,
is the reason for the colt's high
ranking in the Victoria Derby.
Honors of the AJC Derby
were with the Victorian colt,
who conceded Vagabond a long
S tM' Flemington the longer
are expected to favor
Carbon Copy more than his
opponent.
Phoibos will have to be taken
into consideration for the Victoria
Derby, especially if he
wins the W. S. Cox Plate on
Saturday. His type of brilliant
three-year-old has won the
classic many times. Phoibos,
who is by Helios, may run the
mile and a half just at well as
he runs a mile.
Breasley, who rode Carbon
Copy at Randwick (where Badger
was engaged for UngarVwill
pilot Phoibos, while Badger
will take the mount on
Carbon Copy.
These three dominate what
betting there is on the Victoria
Derby.
Vagabond won't race at
Moonee Valley next Saturday,
but Carbon Copy is to tackle
the Cox Plate.
