A NEW chairman of the Commonwealth Im-
^^ migration Planning Council was appointed
He was Mr. E. N. Drury,
M.P. for the electorate of
Ryan in Queensland.
He succeeded the Hon. D. E.
Fairbairn, D.F.C., M.P., who resigned
as chairman following his
appointment as Minister for Air.
The Minister for Immigration,
Mr. Downer, said that Mr.
Drury, who entered Parliament
in 1949. had had wide experience.
His consistent interest in
migration and allied matters and
his professional training in law
and accountancy would be most
valuable in his new appointment.
Fortunate
Mr. Downer said it was a
fortunate coincidence that Mr.
Drury was taking up the chairmanship
before the first meeting
of the reconstituted Planning
Council, which had been appointed
for three years from
July 1, 1962. The deputy chairmen
of the new Council would
be Mr. Ian McLellan and Mr.
A. E. Monk.
In addition to the chairman,
the new Council would include
10 former members and six new
appointments. Three members of
the old Council. Sir Ian Potter,
Mr. R. J. Vicars and Sir Samuel
Wadham, were retiring.
New members were:
Hon. J. I. Armstrong, Sydney;
Mr. F. E. Foulis, Brisbane; Professor
J. N. Lewis. Armidale,
N.S.W.; Mr. T. M. Scott, Narromine,
N.SAV.; Mr. H. J. Souter,
Melbourne; Mr. A. H. Urquhart,
Sydney.
As well as the deputy chairmen,
the Council would include
these former members:
Mr. B. C. Button, Sir Arthur
Coles, Sir Douglas Copland, Sir
Tasman Heyes. Mr. A. J. Keast,
Mr. W. G. Gerard. Mr. J. F.
Ledger, Mr. R. E. G. Shone.
