Turf Flotsam and Jetsam.
Br " APZMAVTUS."
The ever-popular Willilamstown meeting OR
Saturday was really splendidly patronised by
a!! classes, and Mr. Sutton's face was wreathed
in smiles as he noted the splendid attendance.
This was due in the greatest measure
to the excellence of the programme, whilst the
popularity of the seaside course had naturally
its bearing on the gate. The going was good,
and speculation of a really brisk order.
After his running second to Regret it was
only to be expected that Gravity would be a
strong; favourite for the Hurdle Race, and so
be was at 5 to 4. He onlv won from a couplp
of outsiders, as his . supposed most dangerous
opponents came down, Alexis meeting with almost
instantaneous .-death.
Backers took even about Currandoolev for
the Plate, but stuck also to the Mord'ialloc
mlding, Rangatira, on whom, Turner had the
mount, and the second favourite won cleverly
from the outsider, Zorava, who split the winter
and the favourite
Yiirrabce was installed in the pride of place
for the Purse, but was not sighted, and so the
stewards, owing to the representations of the
"Stipes," asked questions and were satisfied.
The books had a bit of a turn as Mallow, who
vent out at eights, Avon cleverly from Hayrick
and Princess Ena.
They had a further, turn in the spring Handicap,
when Scotch Mist, belonging to Mr.
M'Arthur, won easily from the two favourites,,
Pistol and Picrus. They were caught a bit, in
t!ie next, as the winner, lima, was solidly supported
down to fours, and easilv beat Curran-
Jooley.
Gravity not only won the* Hurdle Racc but
also came out and swamped his field in the
.lumpers' Flat Race, beating the well-backed
larboard and the favourite, Moani, and then
it was "heig ho" for town.
Mr. .J R. Cooke has received some reallr
wit a! entries for-his meeting on Saturday
next a A.spendale Park, as nearly 120 nominations
have been received. This course is improving
in favour by leaps and bounds, and so'
no doubt there will be a rattling good attendance.
The following is "Goulburn Valley's" interestingcontribution
thiB week :—The Shepparton Plumptow
feting held on 21st August did not receive the'
support usually gi.ven that up,-to-date club : but
tevertheless a good day's sport resulted in spite of:
tbe small entry and comparatively small attend 1 -
ance. All the arrangements were carried through'
without a hitch. The President's Stakes, which was
for 16 a.a. who had never won more than £20 nst
m one stake, at £1/1/ each, received only sevsni
nominations, whereupon the committee,: in thriai :
usual sportsmanlike manner, added £2/2/. I trust
this go-ahead club will receive its usual large snpr
Port at its final meeting, as no coursing committee'
deserves more support than that of. Sheppartom.
Tec following were the results : President's Stakes
