TERRIBLE MINING DISASTER.
A terrible calamity occasioned by gas
occurred on Thursday night at the Stockton
Colliery, Newcastle, N.S.W. Eighteen
men went down the pit on Thursday
evening to inspect the portion of the
mine where Garran and Smith were suffocated
on Tuesday. When the perilous
situation of the men below became
known a rescue party .went down
to help them, but in a little time needed
assistance themselves. The following
fatal results are recorded:—Sydney
M'Alpine, single; Thomas M'Alpine,
married, no children; Benjamin Barley,
single; John Cockbnrn, widower, two
children; James Sweeney, single; William
Gascoin, single; John Charlesworth,
married. no children; Daniel Fitzpatrick,
single, supposed to be a dead body not
yet recovered. Several of the men who
were rescued remained unconscious for
some time, and the ill effects have not
yet passed away in all cases.
