LONDON, January 15.
Lloyd 8 Register indicates that shipping
under construction at the end of Decem
ber in the British Isles showed nn in
crease of 153,000 tons, compared with
September, although the present total
(1,242,000 tons) is 336,000 lower than at
the end of 1927, and the average tonnage
constructed in the six years 1923-28
amounted to ouly 1,220,000 tons, com
pared with an average of 2,000 tons in
1918.
About 115,600 of the tonnage now id
hand in Britain is intended for the British
dominions.
The tonnage under construction abroad
is 1,375,000, 56,000 lower than in Septem
ber. It exceeds by 132,000, however, the
tonnage building in the. British Isles
Four countries abroad have more thaD
100,000 tons under construction—Germany,
382,000; Holland, 182,000; France, 161,000;
and Japan, 118,000. |
The total under construction in the
world is 2,618,000, of which 47$ per cent
is in the British Isles, compared with the
pre-war percentage of 57.
Reduction is again shown in tanker ton
nage under construction, compared with
1927, end the tonnage of motor ships
building in the British Isles is still less
than the tonnage of steamers. The motor
ship tonnage under construction abroad
is 859,000, compared with 506,000 for
steamers. The world figures for motor
ships under construction exceed by 184,000
the similar total of steam tonnage.
