The Royal mail steamer Madras arrived on
Saturday from Sydnoy, and loft again at two
o'clock yesterday afternoon, taking with her tho
English mails.
Tiie s a. Derwent left Launceston at two p.m. on
Friday, the 26th inst., and arrived in Hobson's Bay
at noon on Saturday. The captain reports westerly
winds and fine weather throughout tho passage
The schooner Ceres, bringing 100 bags bran from
Port Fairy, arrived in tho Bay during Saturday nijfht.
Tho prevailing winds were westerly.
Tiie Mataura (Panama, New Zealand and Aus
tralian Royal Mail Company's steamship, 1786 tons,
Captain G. E. Bir.l) loft Plymouth at one p.m. on
7th August. She had heavy weathor on the 8th, after
which, fine weather to St. Vincent, which island was
reached at two p.m. on the llSth, Coaled, and loft
St. Vincent at five p.m. on tho 19th. Fine weathor
till 1st September, when sho encountered a heavy
hpad wind and sea, which lasted till tho 5th. Camo
to anchor in Table Bay at two p.m. on the 15th.
Coaled and started again at four p.m. on tho 23rd.
Moderate woather till the Sth inst., on which day
sho mot with a severe gale, which split tho fore;ail
and foretopsail. 31st August : Mrs Twentyman,
saloon passenger, was safely doliverod of a daughtor.
25th inst. : Mrs Bourn, saloon passenger, was safely
delivered of a son. Health of passor.gors and crow
during the voyage, very good. No deaths. Tho
Mataura was launched in February, 18G6, at tho Mil
lerell ironworks. Sho is 312 feet long, with a beam of
35 feet, and a depth of 26 feet. Her measurement,
including the engine room, is 17S6 tons. Tho engines
are nominally 450 horse-power, but capablo of work
ing up to 2300. Three inverted cylinders, two steam
winches, ono steam capstan, washing and drying
macbino. Tho pantry is fitted up with hot closot for
dishes and hot wator, and taps and steam percolators
fortoaand coffee, for the use of thesaloon passengers.
She can accommodate 130 first-class, and 75 second
class pnssegors. The roason of tbo delay in tho
voyage of the Mataura was the breaking down of tho
engines previous to her arrival, and again on two
subsequent occasions between the Cape and this
port.
The steamship Western left Portland at a
quarter to elevon o'clock a.m. on Friday, Belfast at
three p.m., and Warrnambool at half-past, fivo p.m.,
and arriving at Port Phillip Heads at four a.m. on
Saturday, and at Melbourno Wharf at a quarter to
eight a-m. same day. Experienced fire weathor
throughout tl.e passage, and had modorateS.W.wind
to Cape Otway; light S.B. winds then prevailed to
tho Heads,
