VTA. LARGO.
[From our own Correspondent. I
Kadi a a, February 25.
The Directors of the Duryea Mine have made
their visit of inspection, and report says are very
well satisfied with the promising appearance the
lode presents at the .'12-fathom level, where the ore
seems to make in branches across the lode, varying
from a few inches to one foot and a half in thick
ness of yellow ore, which is of good percentage.
The news from the Wheal Stuart is encouraging,
there having been more copper stains cut in course
of sinking through the clay. Eiiipiiries after shares
are constantly being made amongst mining specu
lators, though the holders do not seem disposed to
do business, except at very high rates.
Of the other discoveries uear the Moonta I hear
but little. There are parties on the various claims
working, and iu the course of a week or so we may
expect to hear something encouraging from them
also.
In Taylor's Shaft at the Wallaroo Mines, as
the work of sinking is proceeeded with, the lode
at eight feet below the 20-fathom is coming
into the shaft, making one solid mass of rich
yellow ore between four and five feet in extent.
Driving lias been commenced on the Icdc at the
40-fathom in Hughes's Shaft this week, the
Jode still holding as good as ever. This is the
deepest level attained iu any part of those mines
at present.
Working operations are suspended for a time
at Mr. Kodda's Smelting Works, in consequence
of some dispute between that gentleman and the
'Company relative to his patent.
At the New Cornwall the development of the
ground still progresses under the able manage
ment of Captain East. There does not seem to
he any great quantities of ore coining to grass,
but all hope aud anticipate that it will eventually
become a remunerative mine.
Last Sunday evening it commenced raining, and
continued with scarcely any intermission through
the night, thereby giving r.iie inhabitants a plentiful
upply of water for some time to come.
