intervening calms were oncauntcrcd during tho remainder
of the passage. When off the Capo of Good Hope, in a very
severe gale, the mainmast was spruug and ecveral spurs und

yesterday, with W,500 cz of gold, and one hundred and
twenty-two passcngei*. She left ©tago at 11 p.m. oil the

England. The first two days out S.E. -winds were ex
perienced, and the remainder of the passage had strong
N.W. winds. The Omco was only six days and a-half

Stkameu ' Kkuola.' — It ii somewhat gratifying to see
Otago uttraotii.g the notice of a larg»! portion of the shipping
interest in the neighboring colonics, and to find that we ore
occasionally receiving visits from tho fastest and most pow
erful steamers in the Australian waters. The ono day we
have the lino uteamcr, Aldinga, another day t'ic City of Ho
bart and this same week we have had the powerful padale
steamer, ICembla, 410 tons, Mailtcr, from Sydney, with 160
pussengotfl. This finu steamer is reputed to bo the fastest
paddle-boat in the colonies. She made a quick passage to
Otago, and Captain Mailler expectcd to reach Sydney in
icfls than five days from this port, but we regret to learn
that this fine vessel, which had cleared lor Australia, with
7000 ounces of gold, was run into by the steamer Lyttlcton,
yesterday, as she was about to leave the port, and was cut
down to the water's edge; receiving such injuries as to
render it necess iry to lay her on tho beach at Port Chalmers
| and to rcLurn her gold to town. The accident is attributed
to great carclessnoss on the part of those in command of
the Lyttlcton.— Otago lVi'tirss, 12th August.
