MISSION OF LORD JOHN RUSSELL TO
THE UNITED STATES.
From the European Times, of July ,Stli, a copy
of which has been received by the ship Nestorian,
from New York via Riocle Janeiro, and which,
through the courtesy of Messrs; Rogers, War
field, Lord and Co., has been placed at our dis
posal, we extract the copious Summary of the
preceding fortnight's news given below.
The most important feature of intelligence,
however, which has reached us through the same
channel, emanates from a private source. It is
not to be found in the jie.wspaper abovemen
tioned, as it is of a still later date than tho 8th,
but it is, we are assured, perfectly authentic,
viz. ? that Lord John Russell has been appointed
by the British Government Special Minister
Plenipotentiary to the Government. of the United
States. Should this beso,thedelieateofficewhich
devolves upon Ins .Lordship ot ? restoring tiic
diplomatic relations of the two countries to the
same harmonious and friendly footing which
existed previous to the misunderstanding be
tween Mr. Crampton and the Washington Cabi
net, is one which requires more tact and good
sense than Lord John Russell can .with justice
lay claim to, and one which his Lordship
would be little capable of dealing with in a
satisfactory manner, if it were not that the tone
of moderation and concession which the Eng
lish Ministry have adopted in the latest corres
pondence on the matters in dispute between the
two Governments will greutly smooth the vay
to a friendly adjustment of the points at issue.
A resume of that correspondence will be found in '
ano til or column. i
We have only to hope that Lord John liussell j
will be found adequate to the task of bringing the i
Central American Question to the same satisfactory j
solution as Lord Ashburton some few years back
did with respect to the Maine Boundary Question
—a matter which at one time threatened to
involve the two countries in war, but wlucli,
however, the firmness, tact, and sound dis
cretion exhibited by Lord Ashburton most
successfully averted.
