Gentlemen, —I beg to thank you very cordially for the
honour you have done me in requesting me to permit
myself to be put in nomination as a candidate for the
seat in the Legislative Council for the district of South
Bourke, Evelyn and Mornington, vacant by the resigna-
tion of one of your members.
Although I consider every member of a free commu-
nity bound to set apart a portion of his time, and to
devote a portion of his labors to public duties, it was not
ray intention, until I was waited upon by a deputation
of the freeholders, on Wednesday evening, to solicit the
suffrages of any constituency until the introduction
of the New Constitution. I was of opinion, and I still
am so, to some extent, that, under the present defective
form of the legislature, there is but a limited scope for
useful exertion. The Deputation, however, pressed their
views so successfully, and withal urged them with so
many expressions flattering to myself, that I felt I could
no longer decline to accede to a Requisition so
numerously and so respectably signed us that with which
l am now honoured.
Personally I am unknown to all but a very few of the
electors ; but the mere fact of an unsolicited requisition
having been presented to me, is proof that my political
principles are not unknown. I shall, therefore, not
trouble you with them in this place, as it is my intention
to explain myself very fully to the Electors, in an address
to them, to be published without delay.
I will, therefore, merely add, that I feel much grati-
fied by the good opinion you have expressed of me ; and,
should I be chosen as your representative, I will spare
no exertions to promote the general welfare of the Co-
lony, as well as the more immediate interests of my con-
stituents.
I have the honor to be, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant.
H. S. CHAPMAN.
