The ordinary meeting of the 'Beacons,
field Council was held o» Monday. Pre
sent : Councillor E. Freeland (War

Tlie Auditor-General wrote, in re
ply -stating that «no books had been

Councillor Brown moved, and it was
' carried, 'That Mr J. B. Hayes be writ
ten bo and asked to place all works in
hand at once.'
-Regarding the maintenance of mam
or important roads, the Minister for
\Lands wrote that the amount for the
?municipality was '£300, tho work to be
. done by the Council under direction
of the Chief Inspector of Roads.
Mr F. A. Finch, Beauty Point,
wrote, stating 'that tlia rond past liis

stating that the road to the Deviot
jetty was overgrown with gorse and
wattle scrub, and required grubbing

Mr C. E. Orchard, 'Launceston,
Wrote, drawing attention -to two cul
vorts on the Bridgcnorth-road by
Owen's property. Referred to the
Tamar Ward.
?Mr James Atkinson, Rosevears,
wrote, stating that someone had stack
ed about SO yards of stone on Ins land
nt Bridgonorth without his permission.

Mr W. J. Carey, Bridgenorth, wrote,
drawing attention to the dangcrouf
condition of the culverts on the long
Plains-road. Referred to the Tamar
Ward.
Councillor Brown moved 'Thnt n

of the Council about the culverts be

Blue Tier.' This was carried.
Councillor Crawford moved, 'That

taken for Jackson's, Bnker's-read, and
tiie old tramline, and they hnve been
iu the department for fome time.'
This was seconded by Councillor Brown,
and carried.
Mr W. H. Brycr# iBeauty Point, wrote
asking thp Council to cut the scrub
between his fence a«d the Beauty
Point-road. Referred to the Town
Ward.
Messrs J. and T. Gunn Ltd., Laun
ceston wrote stating that they had
inspected the Alicia 'Hall at Bencons
tiold, and found that the south-east
and south-west corners of the hall had
slightly subsided. This had been caus
ed hy tlie water from the roof, which
had been conveye^ to those points by
spouting and down pipe being allowed
to remain in close proximity to foun
dations, which are of concrete and
stone. The ground had become satu
rated with water, and in this state ex
panded, when dry weather sets in it
contracts, thus causing the unequal
action at these points. They recom
mended that two concret© piers be
placed undr .hose corners.- Councillor
Brown mo..-'- that the licence be
granted -w'l-ii the work is carried out.

Chas. P. Mohr, Rosevears, wrote,
regarding the proposed road from Mr
Plummer's to Mr Rosevearfi'.
Mr W. E. Truscott, Be.ioonsfield,
wrote, drawing attention to the dis
graceful state of tho sanitary pans,
which are more holes than pan. Re
ferred to the Town Wnrd to report.
Tlie Warden read a letter from the
sub-inspector as to where the £300
should be expended. Councillor Brown
s/tid the Warden persisted in contra
dicting him in saving tliat no provision
had been naude for stone en Jarman'f
Hill. It was intolerable -to ask the
York Ward to maintain that three
miles of road. He moved that' the
York Ward Iw given an opportunity to
meet the chief inspector of roads on
the matter. This was seconded by
Councillor Lazcnby. Councillor ;G|ow
n,ns stated he agreed with the sub
inspector, thrft the roa,j fcy Spotswood's
was the best from there to Launceston,
and on the mileage basis the York
Ward got £2G, and thr Central Ward
021, and the Tamar Ward £20. He
could not agree with Councillor Brown
that*the York Ward was not getting a
fair deal, and Jarman's Bill was thr
worst part of the road. He moved
that the inspector's arrangement be
agreed 'to. Councillor Atkinson, whr
seconded, stated that lie- agreed with
the sub-inspector, who, ho contended,
was a capable and fair -man. Councillor
Oliver: Why is the Beauty Point-road
2ut out? The Warden: I know that the
majority of tho councillors agree with
ato that I acted in the best iivwrcst*
of the municipality.
Tlie amendment was carried. Coun
cillor Brown called for a division.
Those voting for were: Tlie Warden,
Councillors Oowans. Beaton, Jones. At
kinson, Lyons; against: Councillors
Drawl'ord, Brown, Oliver, Lnzenby, and
Stonehoupo.
A letter was received from the rosn
-lents of Richmond Hill, asking for thr
rotes to the jetty to be expended at
once. It was resolved to forward the
petition to the Public Works Depart
ment. and recommend it.
Councillor Gowans moved that ten

Councillor Oliver moved that the
York Ward be cut into wards. At pre
sent the ward was like a horseshoe, and
watj too unwieldy lo work. Councillor
Crawford seconded for the sake of
discussion. Councillor Williams stated
tliat the wards had been re-adjusted
to give them an equal value to comply
with the Act. Tlie motion was lost.

The Warden stated that the Clean
