CUHIOUS PHENOMENA.
A curious experiment in animal magnetism
was lately made at the Souibte do Medicine
Pratique, and the facts observed having been
strickly verified, wo may relate them as
carrying out certain theories which have
been greatly discussed up to the present
day. Dr. Baradnc, the cxperimentor, pre
sented to the society, as his subject, a lady
of about thirty, whom he caused to be seated
in the centre of the hall. Standing behind
her at the distance of several yards, he
plunged her suddenly into a state of lethargy
without influencing her vision in the slight
est degree. According to the common rule
with magnetised persons, the subject was
then insensible to the touch of any stranger;
but on M. Baraduc's silently imlliny that she
should become conscious to any contact,
such was immediately the case. One of the
patient's arms being then placed in a state of
cataleptic rigidity, it remained immovable
notwithstanding the efforts of various,
persons to press it downward ; but
at the unspoken desire of M. Bara
duc it immediately resumed its previous
position. M. Baradtie, whose experiments, it
is hardly necessary to add, arc not in any
way to be thought an imposture or anything
else than what they appear, since ho is a
medical gentlemen of tho most respectable
standing, states that after thus Influencing
the will of the patient he invariably is con
scious of an actual transmission of tho ner
vous forces, which leaves him in a state of
great fatigue. Ho is thuB led to believe
that the equilibrium of any nervons system
disturbed by disease may bo restored by
magnetism, at the expense, however, of the
operator's own vigor.
